I am a very good sleeper. I rarely if ever have a problem falling asleep or staying asleep. Last night was the exception. I have a huge very strong cappuccino at about 6 p.m. last night and I was still awake at 5:30 am. Was it the caffeine? Who knows. When I play cards on Monday night I have a cappuccino every week and it never keeps me awake. I tried reading, I tried praying, I tried watching TV, I took an ibuprofen, nothing worked until shortly after 5:30 a.m.I did fall asleep and slept until 9 a.m. This afternoon I took a 2.5 hour nap. I am feeling fine but I am not happy with what happened last night. I was tired, but I just couldn't fall asleep. Bummer. I am now a lot more sympathetic to those of you have have sleep issues. What do you do when you can't fall asleep? My sister in law tells me she cleans her house, I played games on my phone!!

I am a very bad sleeper, I can only sleep 4 or 5 hours. I read every evening until I feel asleep and when I wake up (usually from 4 to 4:30 AM), I get up and I silently go down into my kitchen to make a coffee and to plan my day.

I would get up and go on the computer but Vince gets worried about me if I start doing that. Mostly I just lay there. I do sleep a bit better than I used to which is good. Hope this was a once-off for you.

I am sure it probably is since there has been no other change other than that big cappuccino yesterday.

@Marty1 I am normally a good sleeper and I suspect this was just the coffee. I didn't like to take any kind of medication so I hope I never have to take anything.

@TiarasOceanView Yes I do too, I have Laura Ashley on both beds down here in Florida and on my bed at home in Connecticut. Overstock.com sells her stuff now which I love! and at reasonable prices.

Thank you, that is our bedroom. I love soft colors and a cozy Laura Ashley quilt. It is a cozy bed but sometimes even that isn't enough!!

I avoid all caffeinated drinks after 16:00 to prevent sleep issues. I also do exercise around 18:00 that helps me with sleeping. In severe cases, I'd take some valerian root tablets that typically knocks me out. Having a good sleep is very important for my sanity :D

I remember waking up and hearing my parents do something like unload the dishwasher. I think that if I get up and do things I will just be more awake. So I turn on the TV very quiet preferably to a show that I have memorized (Frasier); listening seems to put me back to sleep. The tv has a timer to go off. Sometimes that works. When I don't sleep I Never nap. A nap will guarantee no sleep the next night.

I use the TV timer every night, I like the background noise. A nap helps me get through.

It's really tiring when we weren't able to sleep as scheduled. Just like you , i play on my phone . Though now i know that doing that will make you more wide awake , because of the light that makes our brain more active thus we can't sleep more .

Goodness Gracious! Cleaning house is a drastic thing indeed! No, no in all seriousness I do the same. Atleast once or twice a year, I'll have a night where no matter what I can't sleep. Usually I am also feeling ill and that doesn't help matters. I either watch t.v. to distract myself or play games. I hope you will be able to sleep better tonight!

@BelleStarr,I have been a late sleeper for more than 10 years.Sometimes I fail to fall asleep.I then don't keep lying on bed and changing sides.Instead I start reading fictions, especially books on wildlife or history or politics.

It probably was the cappuccino. I drink coffee in the morning but can't have any caffeine after that because I have trouble sleeping if I do.

I never had a problem getting to sleep or staying asleep until menopause. Now I have at least 2 or 3 nights I have so much trouble getting to sleep I want to scream. Sometimes 3 or 4 hours of tossing and turning. I never get up and do other things I just keep trying to sleep.

My mother became an insomniac at menopause as well. What a bummer. I slept fine last night, I really think the cappuccino just had more caffeine than I could handle, it was a huge one.

@BelleStarr Yea that's probably all it was since you said you never have problems sleeping. Yea it's a bummer, I had always been a 7 second kind of girl. 7 seconds after my head hit the pillow I was gone. Not anymore.

I get those nights once and awhile but normally am not a great sleeper- but thankfully not for as long as you. It probably was that there were things on your mind and that along with the cappucino could have done it. Believe it or not- warm milk helps as well as Magnesium powder as it relaxes your muscles. Hope you sleep well tonight!

I did try milk, cold though not warm. This was just one of those nights when all my tricks failed. I guess since it only happens once or twice a year I should not be complaining.

Hello, well I am the queen of insomnia. I have suffered with insomnia for almost 30 years. Nothing seems to help except when I take my prescribed medication. But even after I fall asleep after taking the meds I wake up throughout the night and can't get back to sleep. My mind is always racing. I am always trying to understand why I can't sleep and why my mind keeps me up all night. I wish I could rest peacefully and awaken refreshed the next day. But it doesn't look like that is in the plans for me. So, I just keep battling this insomnia and I am very unhappy all of the time because of it among other things. I appreciate you being empathetic to an insomnia sufferer. No, it is not a fun thing but I just have to keep going though it. Maybe one of these days I will be able to kick insomnia out of my life forever. Until then I just have to cope and suffer. Thanks for your post.

I am so sorry that you suffer like this. You would think that with all the advances in medicine they could come up with a really effective way to help people get the sleep that they need!!

It happens to me occasionally, usually if I eat something like a piece of cheese or some other protein,I can fall back asleep. It's hunger that woke me but I don't recognize it until I've been struggling awhile to go to sleep or back to sleep. But if it's a late cup of coffee or just too much iced tea during the day, forget it. I just get up and stay up until it wears off. I don't do much, just watch TV or a movie or read.

Insomnia is one of the most irritating things I have ever found! I prefer reading storybooks. Doing something with the computer or smartphone destroys the sleep even more!
