If I could live in a house that had no other neighbors within a five mile radius I would love it.

What would you say about this? You know it's impossible to set on your front porch without seeing your neighbor washing his or her car on a weekend or hearing your next door neighbors yelling that they need more beer. Imagine finding a place that was in the country but yet still close enough to the city to commute to all your favorite coffee shops, retail malls and casinos.

OH what a dream. I would love to live somewhere like that especially if it were near the coast!

@lookatdesktop You need to see the Atlantic from Cape Hatteras on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Better yet, from the top of the Hatteras Lighthouse.

@lookatdesktop Two out of four is not bad. I have seen the Pacific from California and the Atlantic from NC and NY but not the Gulf or Lake Michigan! So at least between us we have seen all four eh!

I have seen the Gulf from Port Arthur. I have seen the coast of Lake Michigan. I have yet to see the Pacific from Northern California or Oregon and have yet to see the Atlantic from the Eastern shores of Southern Florida.

Or a city person that is an easy thing to say. We lived in the country and were glad our neighbours were not five miles away on one occasion my wife's car broke down while I was on a business trip. For her having a neighbour half a mile away was a godsend. It was still quiet enough not to have neighbours yelling and disturbing you.

@lookatdesktop It isn't but it was an enormous help in this instance. This area is not like the ranches of Texas though.

I'm a bit lucky cause I live in a corner lot so I only have 2 neighbors, one at our back and another at one side and those sides have already been fire walled. The front and the other side are free and we still have enough space to do our thing.

You know, our grand parents lived on land that was far and wide. It is only since I grew up that I realized that people living in cities like sardines in the 21st century have no real sense of privacy. I think I find more privacy in the car with my earbuds and my walkman on.

There would be pros and cons to living in an isolated area, you'd have to weigh them up carefully before moving to a place like that.

It's kind of a pipe dream any how. If I was living in West Texas I would easily be able to find a house at least near the edge of town with a very large area of land to plant my favorite trees and such.

Living on the outskirts of a big city is like having the best of both worlds, When you want solitude you have it in a heartbeat. When you want to see the sights you can venture off into the heart of the big city and spend an entire day at shops, malls, theaters and parks. Then return at the end of the day and chill back home where the quiet calm is a welcome thing.

We live 50 km from town. So no trips just for coffee. We can't see any neighbours from our deck or front yard but they are closer than 5 miles.

You are considerably more at an advantage than over 75 percent of all Dallas residents.

@lookatdesktop I am not sure. I would be nice to walk and join a friend for coffee.

I would love to live on a large property with neighbours quite a distance away. Five miles is a bit extreme but a city block or two will do.

I'm probably going to inherit a place like that at some point. Approximately 7 miles from the nearest neighbors who actually live in their place, 30 from town, an hour or two from the casinos in Laughlin, NV... too bad I really can't stand being out that far! Wanna trade?

My parents place is a lot like that, only it's not quite five miles to the nearest neighbor. The only neighbor they can see is my sister's place right next door, though. The next nearest house is a good 200 yards away in either direction along their single lane dirt track. But 15 minutes away are all the amenities they need.

Both of my sisters live on several acre lots. One lives on a farm in the uppermost area of Michigan's southern peninsula, and my other sister has several acres of land in Indiana. I live on a 1/4 acre lot along a line of track houses that go for miles in both directions west and east. But when I get the window in place my man cave will be a bit quieter hopefully.

You don't need 5 miles, just an acre between homes is all you need. We are in the boonies and we gave up city life (in New Jersey) for the quite country life.

I don't have any neighbors to either side of my place for about a half a mile, but I have a bunch of neighbors across the street. They are usually noisy on the weekend when they are unloading their ammo on whatever target they are shooting. But that's fine. It's not a terrible noise. The one neighbor with a super loud truck is far more annoying.

@lookatdesktop Yes, but I only have a few and aside from a few mechanics (such as the trucks and 4-wheelers) it's generally quiet. Unless the coyotes are yapping.

When I first moved to Fairfield from Arlington @lookatdesktop , I was the first person on this soon-to-be road. 20 acres of peaceful bliss. THEN the 'others' started coming. I did sell 3 1/2 acres up at the front of my property and both people are pretty quiet. It's the ones that are 20, 40, & 60 acres away that are the noise-makers. I'm only 2 miles from town; which is good. But at least my property is surrounded by woods, so it's really not too bad overall.

It sounds like paradise. No people. The only noise is the noise you make yourself.
