Several people have been showing us their old photos, so here is one of my great aunt Flo. I never knew my grandfather's sister Flo, who according to my grandmother was 'no better than she should be'. As far as I know she based this opinion solely on the fact that Flo was 'on the stage'. Flo made her living in the Music Halls in the early 1900s, when they weren't considered to be very respectable places. They differed from the ordinary theatres of the day, in that they were designed so that mainly working class people could drink, eat and smoke in the auditorium, while at the same time watching the show. The entertainment was of the burlesque or vaudeville genre, consisting of comedy acts, singers, jugglers, impressionists, mime artists, pianists and male impersonators. Flo seems to have been one of the latter, judging from this old sepia photo of her in top hat and tails, complete with cane and cigarette.(This was probably what scandalised my grandmother.). Flo died in her early thirties, and Granny intimated that she died from some unmentionable disease, brought on by her questionable life style. Who knows? Flo seems to have been full of 'joie du vivre', someone I would have been delighted to know.

My grandmother never spoke to me about Flo, but my grandfather loved his sister, and my father did too. My dad told me what he knew about her, and I'm so pleased he did.

Wow! I am amazed seeing a woman of this time wearing such an outfit - with pants! And to know what she did for a living - surely that was quite controversial at the time. She passed away so young, but I wonder if she had the time of her life doing what she did - it took a certain kind of person to be a performing artist at that time!!

As you say - pants! That must have horrified Granny. Flo certainly was a strong woman to pursue a career that she obviously loved. She may not have lived long but at least she lived life to the full.

It seems back then anyone involved in the theatre was not a nice person but I love this picture of your Aunt Flo and would have loved to have seen her on stage.

I would have loved to see her perform as well. She played several musical instruments too, the mandolin being her speciality.

She did her own thing, and wasn't worried about the conventions of the day.

That's kind of fascinating, we don't have anyone that interesting in our family tree, not that they are telling us anyways.

@jaboUK I don't know, they're a pretty dull bunch today, so I cannot imagine anyone interesting being related to us.

That 'unmentionable disease' took a lot of people back then and not just in that life style. Soldiers too.

Flo is the type of person most people would enjoy! Ironic that your grandmother was so against Flo as 'cross dressers' like Danny LaRue were adored by the British public. Have you ever heard of him?

Of course I've heard of him - he was a great entertainer with legs any woman would die for! My Gran was not typical of the British public.

@jaboUK Did she keep a journal or something, what makes her chose this profession. Especially in an era where women's place is in the home doing the house wife thing

Your Aunt Flo is very stylist and also bold to her burlesque art. But I don't like her smoking habit like your mother.

She must have had a talent for performance from childhood .Judging from the photo ,she cut quite a figure .I can imagine that it was hard to make a living as an actress then, not to mention people looked down on them then .

I have to say the first reason I opened this post was because of your aunt Flo. My mum's name was Flo, thought maybe we were related but to my knowledge she was not a burlesque artist, besides she was younger being born in the 20s. That is an interesting profile of your aunt, thanks for sharing.

@jaboUK I know, when I did the maths I figured that, but it was simply interesting where the mind leaps when it sees something like this. The picture of her wearing men's clothes that is also something my mother did.

@Scindhia No I'm afraid I don't. Flo was Grandad's sister, not Granny's. Photos were very rare in those days and I should think Flo had this one taken in a studio in order to promote herself to prospective employers.
