Michigan and Canada Getting Hit with a Major Snow Storm

What was supposed to be a small amount of snow turned into something much worse. Originally we were supposed to get less than one inch of snow later today, but with some high winds, but it turned into a two to twelve inch forecast beginning much earlier today.
We probably looked foolish today as we were cleaning windows when the blizzard first began. We had no choice as we had to do one this week, as we do it every other week, rain or shine. When we began doing the first job it was already pretty windy and barely snowing, but by the time we finished the last job the snow was swirling all around us and already settling on the ground. When we returned to my house the snow barely covered the ground, but now, at almost six pm, it's got to be about four inches with more coming through the night.
I'll probably be running the snow blower just after dark to get a large portion of the driveway and then need to do it again tomorrow morning sometime.
The majority of the US is getting heavy rains and rainstorms while we get blessed with the snow. I'm including a link to the weather channel for our area. If you look at it before eleven tomorrow morning or before it quits snowing you'll still see some of what it's showing right now.

@MarshaMusselman We are about 45 minutes west of the Detroit/Windsor border, in a little municipality known as Chatham-Kent. And still now, its above the freezing mark, and I sure hope that it stays that way.

@Juliaacv Earlier it looked like the snowy section was just in the middle of Detroit, so if you're, I'm guessing you meant east of the border, unless that part of Canada is west of the border but east of Detroit itself? Anyway, it looked like some of Detroit might miss the snow and get mostly rain, but it depends on how that line of snow fluctuates. Maybe it will miss you too, that would be nice.

How far north are you in Canada? Unless a place gets flooded out, I'd rather have rain more than snow any day. Less work involved, usually. This could be our last major snow storm as next month for the most part will be in the mid thirties to mid forties Fahrenheit. Next week may bring a bit more snow though, but we'll see how that pans out.

@kevin1877uk That was a few years ago, though. It wasn't from a El Nino, I don't think and I don't believe in Global Warming. I think that is a big hoax.

There is never a day when we do not hear of snow, snow storms, strong winds, heavy rains in your area. Wonder if this is going to be a regular feature. Not a happy situation.

It is normal for us for the winter months, as it nears to June all that will be over with other than maybe the stronger winds, and rains, those can be anytime and any month of the year.

@allknowing It's much the same generally although when it snows is always different and how much each area gets might change from year to year, but we usually have two to five snow storms per winter. When I was young it would come and stay until spring. In recent years it, the temps go up and down all winter long. We used to have what we called a january thaw when the snow and ice would completely melt and then we'd get more again that would last to the end of winter and beyond.
It's different, but still cold mostly. The last two years were the coldest we ever had in our area, this year was the warmest up to last month.

This weather system affected a major portion of the eastern half of the country. Hopefully you didn't lose power!! The winds are still brisk here today.

@BelleStarr It did look like a major storm system going through most of the states that two day period. I'm surprised though, that not too many places in Canada got hit with it, or just not the cities where my mylot friends live.

Nope, our power stayed on fine, and I didn't hear of anyone in the area that lost there's either, but maybe I just didn't hear. I saw how the storm was headed east and north, did you get any of that rain in Fla?

I know what's taking me so long to move, my ailing mother and debt that we need to pay up before considering any type of move. Florida and Arizona is where the majority of Michiganders go to get away from the winters here.

@DianneN I did live in North Carolina in the early eighties, so I have lived in a warmer climate at least once in my lifetime already. It was lovely there, and even though we had winters, it was shorter than in Michigan.

you mean this one isn't heading your way this time either, Paige? It looks like a large portion of Canada that is due north and east of Michigan to the coast is being hit with this snow storm too, depending on how it all plays out that is.

@paigea Usually, I'd be wanting snow for the Great Lakes which need it from time to time, but I heard they have an extra amount of water these past few years so a year without much snow won't hurt them none.
For your sakes, I hope you get some snow before spring gets underway, one good snowstorm would be nice it sounds like.

@MarshaMusselman nothing coming this way. It is supposed to be +10 Celsius later this week. I am more worried about the fire season and wishing it would snow.

@MarshaMusselman Thank you, Marsha. Now that the myLot staff has made lots of improvements I do plan to spend more time here. I see that earnings here are once again pretty good, too. That is not the main incentive for being here, but it is kind of motivating.
I have never been better, and am grateful for good health, good relationships, and finally, good internet connections.

Hey, rub it in. How you doing these days other than enjoying your nicer weather? Miss seeing you around, in fact I keep forgetting that you're even here sometimes. A larger portion of the bubblews crowd has migrated this way in the last six months. You'll have to come visit a little more often.

Sounds like a plan. I'll send you some snow and you can send us some heat. Now wouldn't that be nice if we could do an even exchange that way?

Well, I have tomorrow off from work, but I'm tending to my mom's meals both for lunch and supper, so I'll have to get out and drive there and back again. My husband works at night but has an appointment at eleven am, and my daughter needs to be at work by 7:15am. She went ahead and backed her car in so she won't get stuck in the street, or so we're hoping. I may get up extra early for me, tomorrow, and get the snow blower out before she heads to work.
It looks like the snow has stopped right now, but it's supposed to snow all night long. It would be nice if this is all we get. Maybe it'll dump it's load, that is the clouds, into the Great lakes instead of the surrounding towns.
I drive an older mini-van so it's a bit above the snow unlike my daughter's and husbands cars.

@jaboUK We live in the middle of town, so if worse comes to worse and we get stuck in the road someplace, we can call a wrecker. Course they may all be out on calls, but the main roads should be plowed by the time my husband and i have to leave tomorrow before lunchtime. It's just driving the street we live on and a small through street till we get to one main drag.

While we do get tornadoes periodically, not at this time of year. They are more common near summer, but don't touch down in our area even though they do come through. We're in a small valley. Not enough to see it with the eyes, but enough to cause some of the weather to miss us sometimes.

Like drive up a mountain that might be snow capped? At least you can leave the snow behind when you go back home again.

Not entirely. We usually don't do a lot of window jobs until April. We do have several monthlys, but it's hard to figure out when to do them this time of the year with the weather. Generally, the days I have off and would have more time aren't the nicer days of the week.
We're doing a house tomorrow morning before I go to work in the afternoon. It will be nice to make a bit of extra money, but I don't like when customers expect us to come at their beck and call. They want to put their house on the market this weekend and wanted it done before they did that. You'd think they've been thinking of doing this for several months and didn't come up with it just this last week,. It's not uncommon though, for people to put this aspect of getting their homes ready as many call at the last minute and then want us to fit them in.
It works out though as I have someone that doesn't mind working on a Saturday, especially since he's not working many hours right now and we need the extra money.

Is that all that's in your forecast, Morley? I'd have to look at my weather map again to see where all it goes in Canada. It looked like much of your Country to the north of our eastern states were getting it, but maybe it's further north than what you are?

@MarshaMusselman the snow and freezing rain is tracking farther north. We have missed most of it this winter...I'm not complaining....last year my husband seemed to live on the tractor, trying to keep the farms accessible.

We mostly got a load of snow dumped on us. It seems to be done finally. It has ice below the snow because it took a bit for the snow to stick when it started even though it didn't begin as rain.

Much of it should begin melting by this weekend, but more snow is coming on Tuesday. Next month will be mostly in the thirties and forties, so that's good. If it works out that way, no more snow should head our way in March.

Heavy rain is better than heavy snow except for the places near to water supplies for I know that could flood low lying areas. Even then, I'd rather have a soggy yard rather than having to go out twice to shovel even thou I can use the blower for a large portion of the work.

We're in Southern Ontario and had mostly rain as we're close to lake Ontario. Kind of a slushy rain with some snow. I haven't seen rain like that for qute awhile as it was cold out there too.
