Muscles sore so spring must be here

Has spring sprung?
United States

Feb 24, 2016 Daffodils are blooming, grass is growing, weeds are racing to outpace everything, birds are tweeting, dogs and children are romping outside, and my muscles are sore. These are sure signs of spring, right? Well, maybe. This week we in the Portland, Oregon area are having a few sunny, and slightly warmer, days. It's like recess time for grownups. People are out tidying up their gardens and mowing grass. Some are busy with small building projects. I hired a guy to come over today and repair (and by "repair" I mean rebuild) a fence that runs along the side of my driveway. And I worked in the yard, clipping grass, pulling weeds, and trimming back the mint. The temperatures are getting a little warmer. It was in the 60s today. The "experts" say we'll have these nice days through sometime Friday. I hope I survive.

He had to tear the fence down, replace two posts and replace the stabilizing railing along the top of the fence when he rebuilt the fence. He used the old vertical planks when he rebuilt and used screws to hold it together, instead of nails (as it was originally built). The new/old fence is quite sturdy—it wobbled before—and looks quite nice. It took him a day to complete the job, and he left the site clean. Labor, materials and cleanup came to $300, not exactly an arm and a leg for such a professional job. Amazing how this small repair has improved the looks of my driveway!

Just hope that the weeds have not heard this. If they keep growing, you will have a hard time getting rid of them. I think you can go out to the park when the weather is really nice and warm.

We have 28F here at the moment, although the weather is getting a little warmer on odd days recently. This is no too bad for North England in February, but I will be happier when the summer comes along.

48°F at midnight here, daytime highs in the mid- to high-50s. We're getting occasional days of 60s, with sunshine. Yes, I like it.

We also have all the signs of an early spring, from tomorrow we expect heavy rain for four days. This is another sign of Spring.

We're having a few days with highs in the 60sF and sunshine, then a few days of rain. Signs of spring are everywhere. Lots of birds, tweeting and at the bird feeder too.

Is Oregon usually a warm state?

The part where I live is located on the 45th parallel, so we have four distinct seasons. The climate is mild and moderated by the Pacific ocean. This winter, and last too, has been warmer than in recent years. Summers here are warm, not usually hot. The joke around here is Portland's summer arrives and departs during two weeks in August.

While I worked and eight hour day today, tomorrow the lawnmower beckons. I love the good weather and we did some weeding on the weekend, but I find yard work to be drudgery.

I used to enjoy yard and garden work, but no more. I'm sore for days afterward. But I do like looking at the results.
