Poem suggested challenge by @Daljinder.
This is a poem I wrote on the first anniversary of 9/11. It's a cry of the heart for what happened that day and for all those who were there and remember those tragic events. I later learned my best friend was supposed to be there that day, but she had a dental emergency that kept her from New York City. God works in mysterious ways. Still this is a chapter in history that will not be soon forgotten.
GOD’S TEARS
Have you ever thought about God’s Tears?
He cried on September 11, 2001
People from every walk of life suddenly sought God
For the first time the ACLU took a back seat to prayer
We didn’t ask congress if we could pray we just did
Why
Because it was the day God cried
America
Land of the free
Home of the brave
Our freedoms were in question
And heroes were born in a day
Ordinary people doing extraordinary things
Reaching out to people they never knew
To defend a God they didn’t know
And God cried
In New York City, Washington D.C., and a field in Pennsylvania
Across our land terrorism now haunts our shores
We declared war
They declared a holy war
Let freedom ring has been our cry
But what price-freedom
And God cried
America is no stranger to battles for freedom
We fought before against tyranny
Did we forget the lessons of our past?
Have we forgotten why we are a nation God protects
Why we proclaim freedom and justice for all
America has fought many battles, but never for God
This is something new
America stands for freedom
But at what cost
And God cried
God is the God of the fatherless, and the widow
He’s mercy justice and forgiveness all in one
Love your neighbor as you love yourself
And we did that day
We took care of our fellowman
We wiped the tears
Looked for loved ones
Helped on food lines
Gave blood
We hugged, cried, mourned and said our good-byes
And God cried
Days and weeks of media coverage
Glued to our TV’s and radio’s
Looking for answers
Newsmen choked on the pictures that words could not describe
It wasn’t ‘Goodnight until Tomorrow’
It was ‘We’ll be back tomorrow if God is willing’
The flag unfurled
Moments of silence
Last words of love
Candles in the darkness
And God cried
God bless America rang out from shore to shore
Prayer services
Churches were filled
Flags were waved
Red white and blue was seen everywhere
Tee shirts
Bumper Stickers
Compassion
Family
Friends
Unity
And God cried
He said He would walk with us through every storm
He would dry our tears
And calm our fears
If we would but call on His name
With outstretched arms He welcomed our loved ones home
I’m proud to be an American
To live where freedom reigns
As long as we don’t bow to injustice and tyranny
We will always be free
And we cried
12 September 2002, Valerie Jean Routhieaux

@yugocean I agree. Our country has not learned a lesson yet... I fear what would finally be the final nail in the coffin...

This is a wonderful poem Valerie, it gets right to the heart of what everybody felt that day - not just Americans.
Thank you @Daljinder for suggesting this to me.

@just4him there will always be conflict and risks in this world of ours. We should always be vigilant and careful.
I'm just glad that online community such as mylot exists, at least we get to share things equally without much conflict. It's not utopia but at least we got something here

Thank you. This is my favorite poem because it has so much meaning for me and what I witnessed daily on my television screen. It was a day that literally changed the way the world does things now. Terrorism is at the heart of everything we think and do it seems. We need to be extra cautious about everything we do and everywhere we go.

Very nice, Valerie. There is a lot of history here in this free verse poem. I heard some stories back then about believers that did cry out for God's help and made it to safety before the towers collapsed.

The devastating loss and pain was felt all over the world @just4him. I remember my whole family was glued to the T.V. screen shocked beyond belief. Frozen still not wanting to believe that horror filled pictures we were all seeing.... You so rightly said that words failed to describe those pictures. I am still having trouble finding words describing it...
That dark day had shooked the world and still do. It will NEVER be forgotten.
I wish and pray to God that it NEVER EVER gets repeated again......
P. S. Although it is meaningless in comparison to the wonderful touching poem you shared, I just wanted to clarify that I didn't start any challenge. I just wanted to know motivational/meaningful quotes and poems... But if you want you can do this challenge.. Maybe make it as your own...
Can I request one thing? Please ask whoever participate in it to post their submissions in this very discussion or tag their posts with your title so it is easy to track and read.
I always get lost when it comes to challenges and miss out on other peoples submissions...
I very much want to see the ones they would post on this one...
Thank you...

A moving poem that resonates with the unity that outshone all other fissures in society in the moment of crisis. United we stand, divided we fall was proved once again. Mindless violence has no religion
I stopped playing Tennis from that day. I had just returned after few games when I saw these too hard to believe, stomach, images on the screen - siva
