~The Police Were Called!~

My Dog! =)

My husband went to the store and the kids stayed home with me while he went. The girls were in their room with their friend who is playing for a few hours today. Our dog jumped up at their bedroom window and barked. The girls looked out and saw 2 guys trying to steal their bikes! The neighbor also saw the guys trying to steal from us and called 911. I called my husband and he got here really fast! Thank God for our dog and a really good neighbor who is always watching! The guys ran and have not been caught (unfortunately) but I hope they do not come back. Next time I might let my dog outside. UPDATE-They DID steal my son's bike! I am SO angry right now as he just got that for Christmas!!

That was lucky. Now they know you have a dog, they may not come back. Most thieves are cowards too.

@JudyEv Yeah I am hoping they don't ever come back! They will find out how mean my dog can be if they do!

That is low of the guys trying to steal from you. I hope they don't ever come around again - or get caught.

@LovingMyBabies Oh no - I thought they ended up not stealing any bikes. That's a shame people steal. Probably you will have to tell your kids to put the bikes in the garage or in the house, or shed? Out of sight from strangers when they're done riding their bikes.

@infatuatedbby We didn't think theu got any either until our son went looking for his and it was gone. =( We now have the girls bikes in our laundry room locked up so they cannot be taken. I hate having to live this way though.

I'm definitely glad that your dog and your neighbour were paying attention. Hopefully this will teach them not to come back. I'm also glad that you guys are alright.

I hope they find the bike, even if they don't catch the thieves. A few years ago I found three bikes stuck in the woods near my house. I brought them up to the house and called the Sheriff's office to ask if anyone had reported stolen bikes. They said so the next day I put the bikes out in my driveway to see if anyone would come and claim them. The next thing I know a detective from the Sheriff's department is in my driveway asking me where I got the bikes as they matched a description of some bikes stolen in the neighborhood the day before. I asked him if he'd come because of the call I'd made and he said no, no one at headquarters had said anything about it. Great communication, eh? The kids got their bikes back but the thieves were never caught.

@dwdavis They usually don't have good communication unfortunately. I know they don't here either. I'm glad those kids got their bikes back. It's awesome that you found them for the kids. I hope my son geta his back too, he's very upset about it. =(

This ticks me off. When I was tutoring a 10-year-old in Oakland, someone drove by the house across the street and fired several rounds into the house. My "student's" mom got a description of the car whence the shots had come. When I called the police the next day, they said that nobody had reported the shots, and that they weren't interested in a description of the car.

I take it they didn't get the bikes. What did they look like? Anything distinctive that could help the police?

@TheHorse Yeah they actually did steal my son's bike-we realized after I wrote this! I am so angry right now! The officer that came out didn't even take a description-he told my husband to do what he had to do if they came back...

@LovingMyBabies Didn't take a description? He could probably get prints off of the bike they didn't steal. What the heck?

Please put those bikes in a safer place and get chains and a lock if you don't have another place to lock them up and teach you kids to make sure they are locked up when not in use. Alos get the serial numbers off each bike and keep it recorded in case someone else does make off with the bikes (take a picture of each bike and write the serial number on the picture. Hope your son's bike is found

@Elizaby Well now the bikes are in the laundry room locked up. It just makes me mad that we have to live this way! I don't think it will be found but I do hope it is.

It probably won't be found. Bike thefts are pretty low priority for most police departments.

I would be too. Do you have the serial number? One time some neighbors stole my bike(about a $800 mountain bike) and I saw it chained on their front porch a few days later. They had painted it red. I didn't have a leg to stand on cause I didn't have the serial number.

@celticeagle I didn't know bikes had serial numbers! I will make sure to write the numbers down from my girls bikes just in case those come up missing next. It makes me really angry because the church bought those for my kids for Christmas. =(

@LovingMyBabies ...If you turn the bike over you can usually find the number under the bottom bracket thing, where the pedals meet. It's a long number as I remember.

Thank goodness for this happening in the light of the day when they could be seen. I hope that it didn't frighten your children too much. Stay safe, and give that dog a treat!

@Juliaacv I know! I am so grateful for that, for my dog and for our awesome neighbor. The kids are nervous but hopefully it won't scar them forever. We have given our dog quite a few treats too!

@LovingMyBabies I'm a dog treater. When we go to see our son I always bring his pup, Ellie, treats. Yesterday I brought a small bag of grain-free heart shaped salmon treats, and another small bag of grain-free turkey treats. She loved the salmon ones, I am always looking for duck treats as she loves that flavour, but they are hard to find even at the specialty shops.

What a shame. It should part of the routine now that the kids put their bikes in the garage. Times are different, unfortunately, anything left outside can be taken.

@AbbyGreenhill We don't have a garage. But they are now locked up in the laundry room. Where we used to live we never had one thing in our yard touched so I really didn't think about it happening until it happened.

@Drosophila I completely agree with you. My assumption is they sold it either on Craigslist or at a pawn shop to get money. Still very sad indeed and it upsets me so much.

@LovingMyBabies what could they possibly do with it? sell it onto another kid? Just such a senseless crime. Not that crime is a sensible thing, but this is just worse
