Travelling... How far do you have to go?

I used to be full of envy.
Why was it them that got to go? Why was I always the person who waved goodbye at the gates and never got to set foot outside? I was always the person who received them days or even months later, just to be an ear to their vacation stories.
It's not that I couldn't stand other peoples happiness and excitement. I just wanted some of my own so I could be the one sharing.
I didn't get to travel a lot when I was growing up, and nothing has changed since i became an adult
These were suppressed feelings, silent questions that went unanswered...
Until last summer.
It was the start of summer and I had just scored a summer job in my country's capital, Copenhagen.
I worked for a company which did sightseeing tours through the canals, a tourist attraction.
The job was easy; sell tickets and help tourists onto the boats.
I loved it, every day was different, and every day had something to offer.
Most of my day went by having conversations with tourists and listening to their stories. But this wasn't like listening to my friends and family's vacation stories, no; these were vacation stories under development which meant that finally I could take part. Finally I wasn't just on the receiving end.
This, however, was not even the best thing.
Through the many conversations I had with tourists, I quickly learned how little i knew about what my country has to offer, and how little I have been appreciating it.
Soon I found myself visiting castles, roaming the woods and checking out the predominantly tourist streets.
The advantages of being a tourist in your own home are not to be scoffed at.
Now I too have stories to tell, experiences to share, and let me tell you, it feels great!

PS. I am a newcomer to the myLot community. If these lengthy personal stories aren't accepted or if there is something i could do better, please do say so.
PPS. English isn't my mother tongue, so if have made some grammatical errors feel free to point them out in a personal message as that will greatly help me learn.
Thank you.

I would certainly never know that English isn't your native tongue, you are really fluent.
I know what you mean about missing things about your own country. I lived in France for a year and made a point of visiting a lot of places of interest, which I never bothered to do in my home country of England.
Btw, I was in Copenhagen in July, as a stop off on a cruise.
Welcome to the site, I hope you enjoy it.

First of all, thank you for the kind words. I think i have a quite healthy vocabulary, but i'm still a little lacking in proper punctuation.
It is indeed strange how we put so much effort into learning about the culture and visiting sites when we are travelling, but when we are home days just seems to go by in a pace that leaves no room for discovering or appreciating our own worthwhile history.
Thank you for reading.

I think that most of us at some point in our lives overlook the treasures that are on our own doorsteps. I know when I was in my teens I had a German pen friend come for a visit. My pen friend stayed three weeks at my home and during those three weeks I showed her around the local area.
Like you I found out lots of things about where I lived that I had not known prior to my pen friends visit.
An interesting first post I enjoyed reading it.

All it really takes is another persons point of view to change the way you see the town you thought you were so familiar with. Just like your experience with your pen friend.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post and enjoying it no less. I enjoyed writing it as well.

Your English is very good.. We would say scoffed instead of scuffed but the meaning was clear.
We like traveling around our own province but we do tend to see more sights when we go elsewhere. I guess we always think there will be another time to visit around here.
We love to go to the mountains in Alberta and that is what many tourists come for too.

@GenericJohn There are, and they are all very far away from each other. Lots of open space here. Which is something I also enjoy seeing while we go on our long drives.

@paigea I don't have that option in my country. Everything is at most 3-4 hours away! Denmark is such a small country, but luckily, there is still lots to see, just not in terms of varying landscape.

Thank you for the correction.
Living in a large country´like Canada, there must be tons of things to do and see.

That's great to hear!
What country do you come from? It doesn't appear next to your name.
Thank you very much for the kind words. :)

We have lots of islands in my country as well, in fact, i technically live on one, it just isn't really considered as such. The islands in my country however, is not filled with vast white beaches, great rock formations or the almost fantasy-like cyan colored water. I think your country is very beautiful!
