Farewell February and welcome March. In only three weeks it's the spring equinox, it's almost time to celebrate the return of warmer days. March is named by the ancient Roman god of war Mars. Before the Gregorian calendar was introduced (year 1752), March was the first month of the year. According a popular saying "March is mad as a hare". International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8. Easter will be on March 27th. The flower of March is the daffodil. Do you have special celebrations during the month of March?

March is a good month to marry, the start of the spring and the longer days make it a pleasant month.

I've always known that saying about the hare a little differently - 'he's as mad as a March hare'. The inference is that hares are interested in lady hares at this time of year and will box each other and behave erratically. So it's not the month itself that is mad, but the hares.

Well I never knew that little titbit about the March Hare. It is true then, you can learn something every day, hehe. Although I did realize that it was the hares that were made, lol

Is this also the reason behind the Easter bunny? Forgive my lack of knowledge, this is really a grey area for me we celebrate Easter differently in our side of the world

It is correct, that is the reason behind the saying. In Italy we say that the month is mad "Marzo pazzerello, un po' il sole e un po' l'ombrello" (March is crazy, a bit of sun and a bit or rain).

@Butchcass4 I make the traditional corned beef & cabbage and my daughter makes a delicious Irish Soda bread. One of my favorite things to do was to go into NYC to enjoy the St. Patricks Parade but I haven't done that in years

I have read that you celebrate the Mother's Day in March, in most countries it is celebrated the first Sunday in May, not in France, they celebrate at the end of May.

I already knew all the facts that you list here, but was rather surprised at your reference to 1752 for the Gregorian calendar. We adopted the Gregorian calendar in the same year, so the date is familiar to me. However, it was first introduced in 1582, which was when Italy, Spain and France introduced it since it was tendered by the Pope. I would have expected Switzerland to have introduced it at that time as well.

@LadyDuck It must have been quite confusing at the time because many countries would actually have different dates. This has to be a problem for someone researching old documentation.

You are right, the Gregorian calendar is named for Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in October 1582. Only Britain and the British Empire adopted it in 1752, followed by Sweden in 1753. As you know Italy (as it is today) did not exist. The Republic of Venice adopted it in 1582, Tuscany in 1750, the Holy Roman Empire (Protestant states) in 1700. It is a very complicated matter.
