Growing onions from an onion

onion starting new sprouts

Over the past week I have been trying something new. I cut the root end of a store bought onion off and I am trying to grow new onions from it. I got the idea from something i saw on Pinterest a while back and so far, it seems to be working! I used the bulk of the onion in something i was making to eat, but i saved the root end and a little bit of "meat". From there i let it soak in a glass of water on a windowsill for a couple days. New roots formed quickly. I then planted it in a recently vacated pot I had laying around. And within 2 days a few sprouts seem to be growing out of it. This is all new to me and may not be going as well as i think it is, but from what i can tell, I have 3 more onions growing out of the wasted parts of one onion, sounds like a good deal to me! I'll let the sprouts keep growing and eventually separate them leaving a bit of root on each. Then plant them out in the garden, or in a pot indoors depending on the timeframe, to mature. I just thought this was a fun little experiment to try. So far so good. I'm only 6 days in and I already have signs of new life. Nothing like instant gratification. Have you ever grown onions, or any other plant from the scraps of another plant?

We grew potatoes last year from some we bought.

With potatoes that is the way to do it but the agricultural authorities don't like replanting of the crops as it causes impurities.

It is good to see the experiment is working. I was told this should work but never had the courage to try. I wondered if you could cut off the smallest segment at the end.

So far, so good. I also planted a smaller one from an onion i grew myself last season. It seems to have one single sprout on it as of now. It would be fun to see how many times I can grow "the same" onion over the years.

Our compost pile is forever giving us volunteer plants. Some are very good, some are duds.

@bobo2500 I have been composting for as long as I can remember. It is easy, and you end up with such nice compost to add to your garden.

@Morleyhunt I almost couldn't believe myself for not starting sooner. I'm just using a bin as of now (very close proximity to neighbors) But it's nice to be putting those scraps and whanot to use rather than throwing them in the trash!

I just started composting this year. I can't believe it took me this long to start.

I am so interested! I've been seeing we can grow more food from some of the foods we eat everyday ... I wish you success!

I just got home from work today and the sprouts had gotten about 1/4 of an inch taller in a day, they're moving right along!

I have never tried this with white onions but I have re-grown green onion many times in a cup on my counter. I hope your experiment continues to go well!
