I got a call from the orthodontist about my daughter who is supposed to be getting braces in a few weeks. There was something on her X-ray that he was a little concerned about at the time but didn't think it would be a big issue when he discussed it with us. After the appointment he sent her new X-rays and files to the dentist, which is standard procedure, and received a call from the dentist about the X-ray yesterday or today. He called me earlier to tell me that the dentist thinks the thing on the X-ray is a part of a tooth, or an extra tooth, and that it will be an issue with the braces. The orthodontist said we will have to take her to an oral surgeon to have the tooth piece removed before he can put the bottom braces on.
He did say that it won't affect the next step we are scheduled to start since we are just starting the top set of braces at this time, but he can't put the bottom set of braces on until it's removed. He wouldn't say what would have caused this tooth piece to be there, but it is in the area of where her one of the teeth that were removed to make room in her mouth was. It makes me wonder if it broke off during the removal of the tooth. We probably will never know what caused it to be there, but now it requires surgery to fix. I'm not looking forward to telling her about it. Now to wait for the oral surgery department to call to set up an appointment to have her seen.

Poor kid. You really feel for them having to go through this.

I had 8 teeth removed before I had braces . . . they were still under my gums and had not come out yet. Apparently I had extra eye teeth and something else (my mom's side of the family tends to have lots of teeth) and they said there was no way the size of my mouth could accommodate all those teeth. Back then they were surgically removed all at the same time. Before that I had quite a few baby teeth pulled out - and I had my wisdom teeth removed in my 20s. Hope it all goes well and smoothly when your daughter has that appointment!

My daughter had two extra teeth that showed up on xrays that had to be removed before her braces could be put on. I don't think it's uncommon to find this but I was surprised back when it happened to us

It seems that one thing after another has to be done for these kinds of procedures. I have two granddaughters who will be getting into braces.

Oh goodness. =( I feel bad for her, teeth being pulled is not fun at all. My son has an extra tooth that he needs removed and I am so not looking forward to that at all.
