They have all of the information they need on file in their system. Usually parents will recieve a letter stating that the child has reached the age of majority and that support will be stopped, unless otherwise notified (i.e. the child is starting college).

Even if the child is attending college, they may not have to pay. Depends on what was in the divorce decree and what the law states.

Each state has a certian age that you are required to pay up to. Most it is 18, for other - like NY - it is 21. You need to find out the age in your state. Once you do and can prove that your child is of age, you can have it stopped by filing a request to whoemever is taking the support out of your check.

Have to get a court order to stop it. Are you paying or receiving?

Sometimes you will still have to pay child support for many years later. I know someone who is paying child support and his son is 25 years of age. If you had any "back child support" you will have to keep paying until paid in full. Have you ever not paid, maybe a few years back forgot to pay? They will stop making you pay when they find it the right time to stop payment. If they havn't stopped the payment yet, you probably have some back child support. Good luck.

Stopping receiving or paying? If you are paying, if there is any past due at all, you will owe this until it is all current. If you are receiving and want it stopped, just contact your local court house, they can point you in the right direction.

Why would you want to cut off support for your child just because they've turned 18? I think almost every parent continues to support their child after they turn 18. Mine certainly did. A divorce shouldn't change the fact that your child is still your child.

It would depend on the age of majority or emancipation in the state you live. Is the child support paid through a Child support Agency or private pay through an attorney. Do have any past due child support that is owed. All those factors would have to be considered.
