What we do with orange peel

My family like drinking fresh orange juice in the mornings. We use juice extractor for that. So many empty orange halves remain useless. But that is what we often do with that: We cut off exactly the orange colour part from the fruit peel (on the photo), put it into an oven and dry it there till readiness. You should dry the orange peel with an oven being slightly opened. Aslo you should not forget to stir the peels slowly after some periods of time. I mean "readiness" when you will have the peels dried in condition and able to crunch while trying to break them. At the end we add crumbled pieces of dried orange peels to our tea brew. Taste of tea becomes heady. It is believed dried orange peels are useful when people have problems with blood vessles. You may try it too.

@enlightenedpsych2 we always ran it with lots of water, and never seemed to be a problem.

@enlightenedpsych2 I think it might be hard on the rubber, but I have always heard to do this. However at one of my jobs lime peels broke the disposal. I just use a compost for any peels I do not use for something else.

Are you sure that the oranges haven't been treated with chemicals? We only occasionally get 'pure' ones.

@enlightenedpsych2 With 'treated' I mean sprayed with chemicals. Can you really wash them all off with water? I have my doubts. If that were possible, rain would wash off the chemicals which wouldn't make sense. Why spray then at all?

I have juicers but prefer to eat the oranges whole. I have grated and dried the peels for baking and seasoning foods. I have also put all my citrus peels in a glass jar, covered them with white vinegar and use that vinegar for cleaning. Hubby likes the citrus vinegar to put on his food as well.

That's good! I didn't know we can use the oven to dry the orange peels. I have seen some people drying the orange peels under the sunlight. I think it'd be easier with the help of the oven. Thank you for sharing this tip. It's so good to make good use of something that we meant to throw them away.

I have made (in the past), orange peel candy, where you take the strips of orange peel, boil them, then roll them in sugar and let them cool and they will set. It is quite tasty.

@TypicalRussian sounds like a great idea. I also know that people add orange peel for flavor to cakes.

I haven't thought of that before. I usually grate the peel from oranges (and lemons and limes) and freeze it to use later in cooking. Or sometimes I peel it thinly (like you did) and make fruit-infused oil. You can also mix it with a jar of sugar and use it to flavour cakes. At Christmas I tried making candied peel for the first time, that was very nice and I wrote about it at new year
Hello everyone and happy new year! I hope all is going well so far. I have loads to write about but haven’t had a chance to post anything as life is still as...

I grate it and use it for cakes, or put it in the niece wave to freshen it. Other than that it goes on the food bin.
