Twins from Different Fathers

In other news, a rare case of bi-paternal twins was discovered in Vietnam. I thought this only happens in the movies. Apparently, the mother's eggs were fertilized by sperms from two different men within the same ovulation period. Okay, that brought to fore some serious moral issues particularly for the mother, but I just can't get over the fact that this is actually humanly possible. According to the news, the woman's husband started doubting because the twins looked so different from each other so he requested a DNA paternity test. And the test confirmed his suspicion. I wonder how the family is taking this news.

It's rare in humans, mainly because of our social mores and because, usually, only one egg is released at oestrus, but its quite usual in cats and other animals. In fact, many cat litters are the product of more than one father - something which helps to keep the gene pool diverse, I suppose.

@yalul070 There are two kinds of twins. Fraternal twins and identical twins. Fraternal twins happen when two ova are released at the same time and both are fertilised, identical twins happen when one fertilised ovum splits into two cells very early in its development. Genetically, fraternal twins are as different as any other two siblings and may be of the same or different gender. They just happen to be born at the same time. Identical twins are (as the name suggests) identical genetically and are always the same gender and look very alike

This is what I'm actually thinking about. There should be just one fertilized egg, right? And then if that egg splits into two that's when you have twins. I didn't know you can fertilize one egg then fertilize another within the same ovulation period -- and still give birth to two kids, though there were hours in between.

@yalul070 - Thanks for elaborating. She would not have thought in her wildest dreams that she would give birth to twins and that too dissimilar. She probably run out of luck and now finds herself in a soup.

It's not he only case, a woman had twins, one black and one white, you can imagine that her white husband immediately had a doubt.

Isn't that interesting? You'd have to be very suspicious I would think to have a paternity test done on twins.

That's definitely odd. I can remember reading a book and this sort of thing took place. I didn't realize that this was possible.
