Ooh I found a fun little tool to play with!

Found a neat little generator that uses the electoral roll ofr the UK to base it's information off of. Input your surname and it will show you where the highest volume of people with that surname live / lived. I typed in my (americanized spelling) surname and got nothing. I changed the O to an A (one of the variants of the name) and was able to see that it's likely we hail from the lower reaches of Scotland. Another source says that it has no data on Scotland but England and Wales are good possibilities. Obviously you can't truly rely on the internet for this info but thought it was fun all the same.
named - Map your surname across the UK. Find out where your surname is unusually popular, or where we think you might have met your partner.

If I come across a site like this but for a wide array of nationalities I'll post about it here.

There are a few sources available, although many of them do supply very limited information unless you are prepared to pay. You could try 192.com

I was finally able to find what I was ultimately looking for. I did look at that 192 site but I don't know tha ti would have worked for me as I was looking (ultimately) for ancestors six generations back.

@ScribbledAdNauseum In that case it would be of no value whatsoever because it is designed for tracing current people.

@Asylum Yes, all of my family ancestors migrated in and around the 1700's... Not so far gone but not so close either.

Thanks ever so much for posting this awesome thing Reality! I never knew about it..going to see it now see what I get. Well, I got the results just as I thought..all in the southern part of the Republic of Ireland, which is where my family hails from. Superb thanks!

I put my name in again after I found out where we hail from and it came up with the exact area as well. So your ancestors and any distant cousins you have today probably spoke Irish Gaelic. The Southern regions still use it today.

My last name does not originate in the UK, although it does appear there. When researching my husband's family tree we had a terrible time getting started.

My family ancestry very much originates in Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland. However, we also have some Dutch and German mixed in. My maiden surname is a hassle. It changes TWICE withour our branch of the tree, atleast from where I can tell. That combined with very little information on even my grandfather (on my dad's side) it makes it complicated for sure.

That's a nice site, but my surname wasn't on the site. I even used a variant too. Also my fiance's surname wasn't on the site too.

It only traces lineage from the United Kingdom. Maybe your ancestors didn't have a high presence in the UK? I think the generator is still in Beta mode.

@JESSY3236 It is still in beta so there really is no telling. I just saw a name pop up that I thought was Italian. Going to put it in that site to see if maybe it isn't? It's a friend's surname.

@ScribbledAdNauseum My surname is supposedly English so I thought it would have it.
