What do you consider to be a good post?

"Good" like "beauty" is in the eye of the beholder. What do you think is a good discussion post?
Is it:
1) a post with lots of comments and response?
2) a thought provoking post?
3) a post you had lots of fun interacting?
Or is it something else?
What do you think is a good discussion post? And how do you go about writing one?
Photo: good is like beauty, it's subjective. I had to explain to a man once, why this photo appealed to me

I'd have to go with "any of the above." I like learning something new, but I also enjoy posts that make me laugh. And yes, I'm a sucker for a pretty picture. As for my own posts, I'm happy when they generate a lot of conversation, especially when some humor is involved.

@Drosophila I suppose so. I actually knew someone who didn't think South Park was funny. The humanity.

1,2 and 3 are all good
the best posts can be about anything really (for me) but I do like it when there's lots of back and forth.
mainly I like factual type posts like historical stuff but i've also liked a few poetry posts which is unusual for me.
I like that picture too, looks scottish.

To me a good post is one that interesting enough that others would want to respond, and comment too. I won't start a discussion, unless I feel that it is interesting, and most of the ones that I have done lately, is about my life, which can be boring at times. I am thankful to all those that have taken the time to interact with me as I know that you all enjoyed reading my didscussions, as it makes me very happy and I so thankful.

@Drosophila That is how I see it, as when I respond to any discussion, I will only respnd to those that are interesting enough that I can give good feedback.

I really can't say because so many posts interest me. There isn't just one thing to make me think that was a good post. If it keeps me interested I respond to it and consider it good. =)

Do you know where this photo is because it looks to me just like that little place in Clare where we lived for a while.
Anyways a good post could be nearly anything to me Wendy.
The only ones I dont really bother with are about ´earnings´

@salonga lol. that's the problem, we assume other's to also have "common sense".. once you start to meet or have to work with a lot of people, then you suddenly realise that it's a myth.
there'll always be those people out there.. that just erm don't get it.

Oh my, that's another tricky one! I've learned that there's no such thing as "common sense"...
I once had to explain to someone at work, why going through another colleague's draw for paperwork when they are not there, is a breach of HR policy.. .

I would give a pass to the first and say 2 and 3. I know most people would say all. But I have my reasons. Bear with me.
When there are lots of comments and responses it is not necessary that all are saying something different. Most of the people who comment seem to think in one direction and that is the direction of the person who posts. The replies to this will be alike in almost all the boxes. Effectively, you read one, you have read all.
Some would be willing to test waters at the other end, for the sake of being different. Then there will be some who will genuinely think about the post and offer their inputs. Effectively, pulling out this category from others for responding is time consuming process. I can do that through thoughtful post, right? :)
And you know me. Fun is my addiction. lol. I cannot resist it. lol

@vandana7 "interesting discussion category" is only people that have the same tag as you do on a post. It's not exactly that interestin :D

It has to be interesting from the topic right down to the last sentence. I had Cheerios for breakfast isn't interesting - but - I worked at the Cheerios plant and fell into a vat of them - that's interesting.

I personally like thought-provoking posts but there's nothing wrong with fun or relatable ones. A "good" discussion should really be able to generate a wide range of comments, rather than 20 or so which are basically saying the same thing.

@troyburns that is true! a good post that tells a story can elicit different response than a good discussion post. so which do you prefer?

That's interesting, surely the people that comments on a post has more to do with the diversity of responses than the actual post content itself?
I've seen food posts takes off in a tangent that would not be possible, if it not had been the participants.

@Drosophila - Very true Wendy. I once wrote a post about all sorts of serious and silly things, and what sparked the most discussion was the bit about pancake toppings. I think there can be a difference between a good post and a good discussion post though. I've read some wonderful true stories here but they may only call for one type of response.

@Drosophila The number of response post indicates that it is liked by many people.
For example what you cooked today may get you lot of responses becauses it is an engaging discussion and it gets people involved as they too like to share what they feel as it is very common topic.
But I wont call it interesting , so even though it may be a topic that is liked or responded by many, it may not be very interesting.
But, that does not imply all the articles with more responses are like that .
I would say more than 60% of times, a post with high responses is interesting one.

@Drosophila That's fine. A previously discussed topic may still be considered 100% unique for me if it passes Copyscape

A good post to me, is one that catches my eye. It doesn't have to have a lot of comments. As not everyone will post on certain subjects. A good post is one where the author will respond to comments and get the commenter or to keep engaging in a discussion. No matter what the post subject .

For me, a good post is that which engages the reader; after all we are here at our leisure and are supposed to relax our mood by some nice chats. Nobody would be interested in research I suppose!
And of course, thought sharing is an important point; so, thought provoking posts should get much attention from friends.
