Breakfast Reading

Have you ever seen a gnome? Or as we know the in the Netherlands, a kabouter. Breakfast is quiet time at our house (unless we have visiting grandchildren.) My husband quietly works on a word search and I read. Usually I pick a light read. Over the last few weeks I have been entertained by this informative book about gnomes. Anything and everything you could conceivably want to know. The book is written in an analytical style by Wil Huygen and illustrated Rien Poortvliet. As entertainment it rates very highly. Have you read any books purely for entertainment?

Most of the time I read for entertainment, the last I have just finished to read is a book by Sharon Cameron ": The Dark Unwinding", that I have really enjoyed.

@Marty1 I think that the book is also available as an e-book. It's an interesting novel, I really enjoyed it.

I read an eclectic mix of books. Children's books, craft books, novels, autobiographies, picture books. My reading list would probably make some people dizzy.

@Marty1 I read a wide mix. One I found educational as well as a good read, was Shakespeare Saved My Life, Author, last name Bates, the first name escapes me at the moment. I read old new, young adult, Christian, autobiographical, pretty much anything. Some books I find unappealing and will just not finish, but as a rule I devour the book.

You mean you read books while you are having your breakfast? I read newspapers. I always read newspaper in the morning while I was munching on bread or cookies or banana or others.

Gnomes, eh? In the 56 years I've lived in this region I can't recall ever seeing one round here, mind you I haven't been all over this city so I'm only talkin bout those parts I've been in. I used to love to read, before they started making the print so teeny weeny that I had to get a magnifying glass to read the text ... it all started with that dang phone book. Anyway, now I simply read here and get so much entertainment, no time for books anymore.

That tiny print is so inconvenient. I think they do it on purpose to make us feel old.

I am a voracious reader. Lately, books on CD have been helping me 'read' a book and work on my quilting at the same time.

Kabouter is one of my randomly known Dutch words. I don't get to use it very often.

@boiboing that was funny. I've corrected it, but it was an apt correction, even if it's not what I wanted it to say.

Kabouter is a fun word. I often ask my family why we don't have a kabouter to help with the chores.

Well Morley I actually had that book and loved it a while back- I think my son has it now and will have to track it down. Very good and entertaining about gnomes.

My dad brought the book with him when he moved in. Now that I've had time to read it. I need to decide if I want to find room to keep it. It is an amusing book, but I don't have a great deal of space.

@Morleyhunt Those used to be called Coffee Table Books and they worked great for casual perusing and I consider it a kind of art book.

The last time I read a book was many years. Yes, I have read a book for entertainment I am sure. Mostly fairy books as I recall. I love the little gnomes.

I read books, as in, I hold them in my hand and turn physical pages. I read them on my iPad, where I swipe to the next page. I also listen to books on CD and on my iPad. That way I can multitask.

I've read books similar to that. My favorite was one on the history of Santa Claus, a biography. It went into detail about how he got his start delivering toys, how he met the elves and found the flying reindeer. I read it with my sons when they were little. It's probably still around here someplace.

The book detailing the information on gnomes was a well crafted work. It was all done to sound so credible.

Random bits of trivia stick în my head as a result of the variety of books that I read. What annoys me is when they use a geographical location I am very familiar with....and mess it up.

When my husband and I were newly married, we received that book as a gift. Now we look like that couple.

My father had the book. He wanted me to drop everything and read it. I told him I'd get to it. It took about a week to work my way through the book, only looking at it while having my breakfast.

It sounds like the perfect morning breakfast time. I hate others talking to me until I have had at least one cup of coffee.

When it is just my husband and I at home, you don't hear any verbal exchange until after we've had our coffee and a bite to eat.

I haven't read about gnomes but i have this poster in my studio. I love it. Every book I read is for my own entertainment. I listen to CD's while I paint. I get them at the library.

I listen to books while quilting. The best of both worlds. It's a little harder with my permenant'houseguest . I don't like headphones, or earbuds.

I read mostly for entertainment, especially beach reads in Florida. Are gnomes the same as trolls? Those I know about from a trip to Norway. They were all over the place!

Trolls are not gnomes. Gnomes would be more like helpful elves.

I love to read and I have a book in my hands just about every day. Gnomes, however, bother me. It's probably just that "roaming gnome" from Travelocity. They gave him a voice that I find creepy and when I watch The Amazing Race, I just see that gnome too much. But I must say, I LOVE the Danish name! You've taught me something very interesting today and I thank you for that! :)

Breakfast is the only meal I sit and read while eating. If there is anyone besides my husband present, we put our books away, but sometimes resent the intrusion of mindless chatter. We like our quiet time. This applies to early morning....my husband leaves for work before seven. If it's after seven the noise and chatter are fine.
