Text abbreviations are specifically not allowed here - see the Guidelines, so why do posts which use them seem to be on the increase? I believe that, now people can use myLot on their phones easily, more people are treating it like a text message app. Folks, you DON'T need to save characters here! "U" for 'You' is not necessary and just makes you look lazy! Many people simply won't bother to respond and you will end up wasting your time and losing money! What do you think about the rule? Do you hate 'txtspk'? Do you think it's lazy or is it a 'sign of the times'? Do you think it should be allowed or do you think all posts which use it should be deleted?

For some un-learning is difficult. I think we all should write correctly or as correctly as possible.

Was that because it was so full of txtspk that you got lost trying to translate it or was it one of those incomprehensible posts which appear to be translated from Dolphin or Martian?

LOL - I think that with most things context and the amount it is used should be a factor. I don't text now, but when I did I didn't often use "txtspk", although I did use a few abbreviations. I use some on here as well, but I don't strictly consider them as textspeak. Regarding deletion, I think that each instance should be taken into account and a determination made rather than saying "all posts with textspeak will be deleted", because there could be other factors involved. For instance, Lambie's response was humorous, so there was a purpose behind it. Another example is a friend of mine that tends to use "u" rather than "you" but he does have substance (most of the time) in his comments and responses. Personally, I do not like textspeak, especially on a discussion forum like this one. I think that it makes one sound uneducated, but that is just my opinion.

I think it shouldn't be allowed here. As for me whenever I see someone using abbreviations for some words on responses or comments I feel irritated and don't respond. May be these should be deleted by admin.

There is a time and place to use "txtspk" but I agree normally it is isn't called for. In the case of humour maybe.

@vandana7 Anyone who thinks they will get away with it in the future is stark raving mad. I will fight for this language till the day I die.

Those are my pet peeves. I just hope people will stop being lazy and interact like normal persons. If they could construct a lengthy post, with more reason that they could spell out words and not use text speak. Should they be deleted? A Big Yes! It's against the Guidelines. Does it need to include all posts and not just discussions? Again, yes! The prohibition on the usage of text speak is not only limited to discussions. Nowhere in the Guidelines does it state that the rules only govern discussions. Ergo, prohibition on text speak also applies to comments and responses.

I have to admit that I am quite an old-fashioned person, though I like to surf the Internet since I was studying in college, I have no idea about all these texting. In fact, I don't get all the words in your title too. Some of my friends like to use these text abbreviations when we are chatting online, and I always have to ask them what that means. I understand sometimes we might want to save the characters, but how much effort it'll take to type "you" instead of "u"? Also, text abbreviations might create confusion as well. There was once my neighbor messaged me and told me "no1 told her something..." So I thought our neighbor who stays in No. 1 house talked to her, and No. 1 house is just opposite her house. After quite some time, and we talked about this, then only I found out she meant "no one told her..." I don't really hate textspeak, it's fine if it's between someone they know how to speak "text" well, but not in mylot and not to me, please. I'd like to learn and improve my English vocabularies here, but not to learn the textspeak. Hope it will not be allowed here, otherwise I might not enjoy myself so much reading the discussions here. I just found out "textspeak" appears in urban dictionary.

I do not like any user who uses text speech or short cuts like 'U' for 'you'. It seems absurd to me and my blood boils. Even if any user is mylotting on a smartphone, there is no problem in writing the full and correct spelling of a word. Those who do so are not only showing disrespect to language but to others mylotters also.

I cannot stand abbreviations, they are hard to read, I do not use a cell phone, most of the time I do not even understand what the user has written. Of course I skip the discussion, but I think I will start to report them.

(stop gigglin', i'm special so i'm told'n can get by with oddities, lol). yepperz, delete 'em 'n do such quick. the sooner 'tis nipped'n the bud the better. right 'long with those titles that then jest say "what do you think?" jest makes my head spin...

I don't mind people doing a 'lol' or 'omg' in comments, but anything more than that is overkill. At least they aren't using 1337.

I absolutely despise text-speak @owlwings . And they wonder why our education level is in the toilet with children. Nobody knows how to spell. I don't think it should be allowed. Now I am guilty however for using LOL, LMAO, ROTF, OMG. But that's it. I should probably use more emoticons to replace those.

I don't know about deleting 'txtspk' posts unless they're full of abbreviations. I suppose giving warnings takes a lot of time too. I'd like to see it stamped out somehow.
