What a real friend does

Melissa has been my friend for about 20 years now. When we first met, she was 16 and I was about 44. Sounds inconceivable that we could really become friends. At first, she came to me as a mentor. I worked at a church and she had just had her Confirmation and was having boy problems and parent problems, so we would go out for lunch and talk out the problems. I left my job a few years later to take care of my elderly mother and we lost touch.
She found me 7 years ago on Facebook and we met up for lunch. She was the married Mom of 2 at the time (3 kids now) and our friendship blossomed. She and my husband met and also became good friends.
I spent the day with her and her family today. She and I went to see my new apartment, then we headed out for lunch and then went to her house where we had dinner, played with her new puppy, hung out with the kids and just had a wonderful time. She's had some health problems lately and has taken to writing children's books to explain some of the problems mommies have, so children will understand better. And she handed them over for me to read and critique. I just think she's amazing.
She decided we need more time together, so she's coming back on Monday to pick me up so we can go to see a movie. What fun! I know that I needed this time out of the house, bonding with someone and I learned that she needed my ear again, too. I really do love her family so much and they make me feel very connected. But that's what real friends do, after all. :)

That is special to have a friend like that. I have two friends from my past who I have lost touch with. It would shock me if either one of them tried to get back in touch with me. I did try in my past to keep the relationships going but they didn't respond.

Since my best friend passed away a few years ago, I've been so lost. This friend has come through like no one else since my husband passed away. So it's nice to know someone is out there thinking of me, even though she has a very busy family and life these days!

I am glad you have some real friends that not only need you but also are concerned about your needs

There was a long time between my husband's passing and friends coming by again. These days, I just pretend everything is back to normal and everyone seems happy again. If it gets me out of the house and a good experience, I'm willing to put a smile on my face and see if I can have some fun again, you know? Took me a while to figure out who you are, but I know "Garden Gerty" when I see her! :D

That is really wonderful to get connected after a long gap. It seems you people meant for each other. Age does not make any bar to make friends. I am glad to know that you can be there for her as a comfort. Yes, real friendship is like that only. All the best to both of you and family as well.

I agree that age means nothing and it's nice to have friends of different ages. It keeps our brains occupied with all sorts of different things. :)
