A Living Legend Is Coming to Town

Music is one of the most subjective topics on earth. Music tastes are as individual as tastes in food, drink, or colors -- except you rarely see people getting into arguments over blue being better than green the way you do when it comes to one band being better than another!!
Having said that, there are acts that are true legends. You don't have to like them to acknowledge that. Case in point: Rush. I'd rather listen to a cat use a chalkboard for a scratching post than Geddy Lee's singing, but I don't think any of their most die-hard fans were happier than I was when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No, I am not a fan, but I'm also not blind. Any band who has sold out arenas for 40 years the way Rush has definitely has FAME and therefore belongs in the Hall of Fame. (BTW, just so you know, as much as I dislike Geddy Lee's voice I'd rather listen to him than Steve Perry!)
That aside aside, there aren't many people who would argue with Gordon Lightfoot's status as "living legend," even if they aren't fans of his music. He's unquestionably one of the greatest and most-covered singer/songwriters of the past 50 years. I came to know his music when I was a kid listening to country music, where acts like Bill Anderson, George Hamilton IV, and Anne Murray were doing his songs. "If You Could Read My Mind" is one of my all-time favorite songs.
And he's coming to town Monday night. And you bet I'm going.
Lightfoot has had health issues in recent years, and watching You Tube videos it's obvious that his voice isn't what it used to be. (He is 77, too.) Still, it's a thrill to be able to go to see a living legend like Gordon Lightfoot, and I'm not about to pass it up!
Here's my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song...and one of my favorite songs, period.
Gordon Lightfoot live on the Midnight Special in 1974. Valhalla...Your Music Jukebox. 5 Channels covering all era's of Rock from Elvis to Lady Gaga. Please S...

I do remember him well friend.
He is a legend indeed.
I am happy to know you are going to see him in your town.
I would also like to see him, never have, though I have seen many bands and singers.
I can hardly believe he is now 77!
Another of one of my fav Canadian singers is Anne Murray.
I can listen to Snowbird forever and a day.

@FourWalls She would most certainly deserve to be Four Walls.
Yes I recall her doing the Cotton Jenny.

Anne Murray did one of Gordon's songs, "Cotton Jenny." She's got a terrific voice, and I find it hard to believe she hasn't been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame yet.

Thank you. I think it's positively sublime. And, as you're Canadian, thanks for sharing your national treasure of Gordon Lightfoot with the world.

@FourWalls I was always a Gordon Lightfoot fan. And Murray McLachlan. I've rarely seen any live performances.

@paigea -- There's another Canadian singer/songwriter I think is amazing: Ian Tyson. He isn't all that well-known in the U.S. (I guess his best-known song is "Four Strong Winds," which was a hit for Bobby Bare in country and has been covered countless times), but I haven't heard an Ian Tyson song that I haven't loved.

In my youth I was enthralled by this man's voice. His music was so much a part of my life. I knew the words to his most popular tunes and still do. When I hear one of his songs come on the radio I crank it up and sing along. It takes me back to a simpler place and time.
Oh, and I couldn't agree more with you regarding Rush and Geddy Lee, except for the fact that I couldn't listen to either him or Steve Perry! I would rather listen to the sounds of silence.

An old friend of mine just loved his tunes. They are rather easy listening and enjoyable.

I really like Gordon Lightfoot's voice and music. Where is he going to be? You wrote that he was coming to town. Which town? I'd love to see him.

He's playing at the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville. He'll be at the Ryman in Nashville later this week, too.

My girlfriend is jealous. She plays him all the time during our music wars.
Speaking of Rush, I listened to "Tom Sawyer" earlier. I was pleasantly surprised that she kinda liked it.

I have two Rush songs on my iPod, and "Tom Sawyer" is one of them. (The other is "Limelight.") "His mind is not for rent to any god or government" -- what a line. I just wish Geddy didn't sound like a screech owl being strangled when he sings.
And, hey, they're both Canadians, eh!

@teamfreak16 -- I can name a dozen people like that without thinking. John Prine, Warren Zevon, Randy Newman, Tom Waits, John Hiatt, Sam Llanas (BoDeans original lead singer)...and I'd even throw Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton in that mix. There are just some I haven't acquired the taste for (Waits is another one that I have to take in very tiny doses, and I prefer other people doing his songs to him).

@FourWalls - I had to warn her that Geddy's vocals can be an acquired taste.

Yes, he is a legend for sure. We saw him here a few years back and his voice was a bit frail sounding, but it was great seeing and hearing him.

Lightfoot is 77? How time flies on us. I remember when he played LA clubs back in the day. The famed Troubador back in 1971.
