People will generally reply to discussions that they feel they can contribute to or on topics that they are interested in. A lot of members here seem to start a vast number of discussions which get no response. I feel they would be better off starting less discussions and instead concentrating on those they already have.
For example, I always make a comment to everyone who responds to any of my discussions. This gives me an opportunity to give someone a 'best response' as well as give out some positive (+) ratings if I think it is appropriate. Also by doing this, it brings my discussion forward again and it will generally get some more responses. Do you give out a best response to any of your discussions? Do you comment on those responses you do receive to your discussions?
Having a lot of friends does not ensure any sort of success, but rather it is whether or nor your friends help you by responding to your discussions and just as importantly, you have to repond to their discussions as well.
I have a number of friends, but slowly I am sorting through them and if they do not respond to my discussions, then I delete them from my friends' list. I do respond to discussions from all of my friends every time I login to myLot. Think about who you have as friends, respond to their discussions and hopefully they will do the same for you.
I see that your rating is 71, although you have been a member of myLot for 5 weeks already and in that time you have started some 87 discussions. In that same time you have only responded to 10 discussions, none of which happen to be mine. In that time, I have responded to a large number of your discussions, although there are times when you might not appreciate my response.
Think about what I have written and you might find that if you help your friends by responding to their discussions, they might respond to yours as well. Also it is not appropriate to start discussions of a very personal nature, as people will not respond to keep the discussion active.
