The Academy Awards

Just a few days ago, I watched the Academy Awards, so I was curious about the “Oscar.” So, as usual, I did a little research. One May 4th, 1927, the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences was founded. The purpose behind this new Academy was to IMPROVE the image of the film industry by awarding recognition for “merit and distinction.” The recognition came in the form of a gold-plated, naked male figure, holding a sword and standing on a reel of film, with five holes in it, representing the five branches of the Academy. Until 1931, it was known as “the statuette.” Then, the Academy librarian, Margaret Herrick, noticed that it looked like her Uncle Oscar and commented about it. The name was adopted by the Academy and is now universally recognized as a symbol of excellence in the making of movies. I thought it was an interesting story. What do you think?

I was happy that Leonardo won also. I haven't seen this latest movie, but he is an excellent actor and has made many other movies that I think were outstanding. Even as a child in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" he was so believable.

@yashvino Leo was just a child in the "Gilbert Grape" movie. He played a child who was mentally challenged and he did so well, that I thought he actually was mentally challenged. You should see the movie. It doesn't have a really good plot, but to see him ACT is amazing. Johnny Depp is also in the movie. I REALLY liked him in "Catch Me If You Can." He deserved an Oscar a long time ago. Did you see "Blood Diamonds" He captured the South African accent really well in that one. He's always up to whatever challenge presents itself.

@Marcyaz Yes, I know what you mean. Some categories I know nothing about. Not good at Sports questions or British Royalty, Opera and several others.

I like to learn and then to share little tidbits of information on MyLot. I'm a "trivia nut," so I collect it. I love to play TRIVIA games, like "Jeopardy."
