Cannon in the Square

During my ramble around Trafalgar Square, I found these Napoleonic style cannons, fixed into the pavement. I was thinking they are acting as bollards to stop cars parking.
So far all I have found online is that in the Square, cannon are used as bases for gas lamps. All the lamps in the Square appear to be powered by electricity now and have much more ornate, non-cannon shaped, bases. Besides these canon don't look as if they have ever been converted to lamps and then back again.
I guess they had a few left over and decided to put them there until a better use could be found.

Those bollards are likely more modern and just in canon shape than actual canon.
