Dieselgate

So VW is in hot water for having a defeat program in their diesel model cars software. The big hoop is that they have lost customer trust over this. The EPA says that the emissions are up to 40 times what is allowed under certain conditions. And it's just the NOx emissions that go high.Yes, that creates more ozone, which is good for protecting us from UV rays. Problem is that this ozone is low in the atmosphere and can cause respiratory problems for some people and makes the air brown (making for some great sunsets). I on the other hand, am more inclined to buy a VW product. The genius behind not only writing such software but getting away with it for 10 years, gives me confidence that extremely intelligent people are making this product. I'd rather buy products from those kind of people because I believe they can and do make a better product. And given that fuel economy is up about 27% and emissions are down about 20% compared to 10 years ago with todays diesels, including VWs, I'm not upset over high NOx. The overall picture is sooo much better that I say make them fix them software on all models and call it a day. No need to for lawsuits and the other hoopla. What do you say?

the software was designed to defeat emissions rules. Changing just the software isn't going to change the emissions is it? they need to design engines that meet emissions targets not invent software that recognises test conditions and adjusts emissions to comply.

The software turned off the particulate filter burning process. It's already in the original software. So by defeating the defeat software, it will return the vehicle back to the original operation.

@Mike197602 Yes, it was designed to do so. The problem is that it reduced engine performance and VW was worried about that. Okay, not VW but the people in charge of building these new engines. They stated that there was not enough funding available to fully develop the engines to meet EPA standards. So they used a very basic (rudimentary) DPF cleaning strategy. It meets requirements. Just robs more power than the engine engineers wanted.
