I have no problem with anyone receiving disability benefits as long as its honest. The system here in the US is being crushed by fraud.

Not every case is a fraud. I have a son on disability. He has a life threatening illness. Without dialysis several days a week, he would not be alive. He worked for 10 years before he got so sick that he had to quit the job.

@akalinus Of course, most cases are not fraud. But it's a proven fact the system is being killed by fraud and all those cheaters are hurting your son by taking away money that should go to him and others in his predicament.

Sounds like that would buy a lot of bread. Only kidding I really don't know how a lot of people today can live on what they receive but I think they receive other perks.

@savak03 I think some like the position they are in and do not try to change it.

No, marcyaz, they are working under the table or doing something shady to try to make ends meet. It's not right but the government is forcing them into this position.

This is no way to live, this is why so many people have to live with other people just to pay their bills. Many people also do not have enough money for their medications.

@kirtis66 Well considering the low amount of money they pay at least they should cover vision and dental.

I'm on disability benefits but I sure don't even get that much. I get $820.00 a month. I do also get food stamps which doesn't stretch out the whole month even though I'm just eating very simple and basic foods and my food stamp funds were cut by $20.00. Those who do receive benefits did not get their cost of living raise this year, since some "genius" figured the cost of living hasn't gone up. Oh really? How they figured that out I don't know

@pyewacket You know if you figure it out you do NOT even get NYS's minimum wage. That is a shame.

That seems awfully low, even if it's paid once a week.

@kirtis66 That is so much worse! I don't know much about the Canadian dollar, but unless they are receiving other benefits, it sounds below poverty level.

Here your disability payments are based on if and how much you worked before becoming disabled and how many dependants you have. I have looked into it and will be applying myself(I had spinal surgery back in 2014), the process is very discouraging though. Some have said it can take up to 5 years to get approved.

Now you have hit a topic that I am pationate about. Since the year 2000 I have been disabled. It took 15 months for me to get approved for my social security benefits. I had to appeal their denial three times and go before an administrative law judge to get them. Now 16 years later I only get 753.00 per month and to get that I have to get social security disability as well as social security supplimental or SSD and SSI. In the past 16 years I think we have only got a cost of living increase about 6 times at the most. And when we get that increase any other benefits we are getting gets cut so the increase is useless at best. Most times the cuts are more than the increase. There is no way to live on this small amount so most people are doing something under the table to make up the difference. Personally I think it is a shame for a country to treat their elderly like this. We have worked and paid in our whole lives. but when we need it they want to dole it out in as small increments as they can. All the while the government is looking for a way to stop paying all together.

Everywhere in the world pensions of every kind have shrunk. REtirement pensions in my country are so little that you cannot live on them.

I can't say much about the situation over in your place because I'm not sure how expensive the cost of living is. I do think that it's very good that people with disabilities are given benefits. It's something the third world countries, like where I come from, don't enjoy much.
