Every country has weird laws. Here in Switzerland we have several laws to protect the peace during Sundays. If you visit Switzerland, here is what you cannot do on Sunday: (you can the other days of the week) - You cannot wash your car in the driveway using a power washer. - You cannot hung your clothes outside to dry. (Who want to see socks waving during a relaxing stroll?). - You are not allowed to drop empty glass bottles in the recycling bins. - You can not mow the lawn with an electric mower. They may sound weird, but imagine the noise that all those activities produce. Sunday is a day to relax and enjoy the outdoor, without unnecessary noise. (The photo is mine, the small beach along the river two blocks from us).

I think it is good to have one day in a week for a little peace and quiet. I know of a few regional law that a township has posted like no opening your car hood except at auto stations and no spitting in public.

People actually hang clothes outside to dry now days? Can you mow with a gas mower which to me makes more noise than electric.

@AbbyGreenhill It would if every time you receive a fine from 200 to 600$. If someone really need to mow they usually ask the neighbor if they can do the job at a non disturbing hour. Of course we say nothing if this happens only a few times a year. If someone is rude, says nothing and start mowing at 7 AM, you may guess that someone immediately call the police.

No, you cannot mow using anything that makes noise, if you want you can cut the lawn manually, but nobody would do something like this. People can hang clothes outside during the week.

The authorities here want to be sure that the laws are respected, if you do not you are fined. Usually the fine goes from about $200 up to $1,000. It's better to respect.

@artemeis I have to be honest, I do not like to see those colorful clothes waving in the wind. I do not care during the week, when people have no time to relax in the garden, but I am happy only to see nice gardens during Sundays.

I can imagine how these would disturb the peace of a Sunday. Our recycling bin is quite close to one of our neighbours and I feel a bit embarrassed every time I drop bottles in it.

If you are capable to put a glass bottle in a recycling bin with no noise you can, but I never succeeded, so I bring my bottles during the week.

@LadyDuck I like the whole idea of quiet on Sunday. Here in the US, most towns have noise laws that go something like this, you can make noise from 8am until 10 pm then quiet. However many don't follow those laws or even know they exist.

What a wonderful picture. I loved the picture. I was not at all aware that such laws exist in Switzerland, as far as Sunday is concerned. It sounds very cool that there are such laws which make sure that people relax on Sundays and they don't get disturbed by others. That is one the reasons that Switzerland is considered one the best countries in the world. However, one question came in my mind - Then when do they attend to their car washing and mowing etc. ? We attend to our errands on weekends as working days are busy days for us.

@dpk262006 Yes, usually people mow their lawns on Saturday, but many prefer to do this task during the week when they come back from work, between 6 to 8 PM.

Children are allowed to play outside, after 9 in the morning and until 10 in the evening, they cannot make noise from noon until 2 PM, that is considered resting time. Of course if the children are as noisy as a mower you can ask them to lower their voices. The NO NOISE hours are the same during the week.

@ramapo17 I know that many Italians do not like to live in Switzerland because it's too quiet. After 30 years in Monte-Carlo we needed to live in a quiet town. If we want animation we cross the border and go to stroll on the shores of lake of Come, 10 minutes from home. I cannot ask better.

Sunday is for relaxing I am with your lawmakers. But Connie Francis even adds another rule - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSL6YNCU4bc That picture looks beautiful. Reminds me of my early walk alongside a meandering brook clear as crystal in Engelberg.
Originally sang by Connie Francis and others followed later the same song Oh, you can kiss me on a Monday a Monday a Monday is very very good Or you can kiss...
