Excellent Cover Song #10- "You're So Vain" - Faster Pussycat

I figured I would start my list of excellent cover songs with this track. This song was originally written and performed by Carly Simon in 1972 and is a timeless classic song. Faster Pussycat, a glam metal band that became famous for the tracks "Bathroom Wall" and "House of Pain", did this cover in 1990. I really like the upbeat version of this song and the attitude shift. Whereas Carly Simon's comes across as bitter and catty to me, this song displays more anger than bitterness when performed by Faster Pussycat.
Awesome cover of the great Carly Simon song by Faster Pussycat - I don't own the song or the picture.

I had no idea they'd done this. Sounds like they had fun recording it.

Sounds fun and I love the attitude behind it! There are a few cover songs I like better than the originals (major sin in some peoples' eyes). This is not one of them, but I still enjoy it.

@dbeck975 - Check out, if you haven't done so, U2's "New Year's Day" by Frontline Assembly with Tiffany (yes, THAT Tiffany.) It's really good.

@teamfreak16 Wow! I love the modernization. I am not a big fan of u2, but this cover is good. Tiffany singing this kind of sounds like Madonna.

Understandable and I appreciate your opinion on this. I knew when posting this discussion, a lot of differing opinions would emerge. I still enjoy the Carly Simon version of this song; however, I also like the different tone of the cover by Faster Pussycat. It's difficult to cover a legendary songwriter like Carly Simon. Those are big shoes to fill; I think Faster Pussycat did an honorable job of covering the song.

@dbeck975 but it still cannot replace Carly. This is her song.

@amadeo Honestly, with cover versions of songs, the idea is not to replace the original. Most bands perform cover songs to pay tribute to their influences.

neat cover version - Marilyn Manson had a fair stab at it too

I checked it out and while I appreciate Marilyn Manson generally and his ability to produce wonderful covers of songs, I didn't particularly like this cover. His covers of "Sweet Dreams" and "Tainted Love" are great though.

I'm not into hair bands or metal,, but this doesn't try to copy the original, and I'll give them props for that.

I do like this one, as well. I grew up with Carly Simon's music and she wrote the song from personal experience. Hence, it really is a little bitter and catty. We women get that way sometimes when a guy pisses us off. lol For another band to cover the song when it's not personal to them, it gives way to freedom of expression and I think Faster Pussycat definitely has that down. Thanks for letting me experience another version of a great song!

I am a cover song junkie! There are some covers that are so bad, I actually enjoy them. There are even a few that I feel are head and shoulders above the original song. The Faster Pussycat version is light and fun, with a little bit of the glam attitude. I still love Carly Simon's version, but sometimes it's nice to hear a different take.

I wonder is Faster Pussycat took their name from Russ Myer's cult movie.
