A penny For Your Thoughts

Just thinking that a lot of my thoughts are better not revealed or spoken aloud really. Our Vietnamese table mate seemed really up set so she was asking my other table mate Shelly some questions about some important piece of paperwork she has to fill out and trying to do this by sign language as she knows almost no English at all. So finally Shelly got the help of one of the other Vietnamese girls here who is bilingual. So perhaps she has now got it straightened out. I really wanted to tell our table mate that living here in the US she needs to learn English now so she will not get so upset. She has been here for a few years and her sign language is not being understood by me or Shelley either. Most of the other Vietnamese do know English very well. Shelley tried her best but the poor lady does not have enough English to make us understand her. I have tried but all I got was that something she needed to do she did not understand and it was very important to her in some way. I got the feeling that she had to fill this form out and did not have enough English knowledge to do so. I hope the bilingual Vietnamese girl did help her as the poor lady did not even try to eat her dinner. If I was to go to another country where English is not used I would try my hardest to learn their language as it makes it so much Easier when you know that other language. So I have kept my thoughts to myself but i wish this Vietnamese lady would learn enough English that we all can help her I do not know if lady is lacking in mental health or its just she does not understand English. She seems so helpless for a woman who appears to be over fifty at least.

It's not so easy to learn a new language the older you get. Maybe the other vietnemese ladies can help her with her language skills and she'll be more comfortable with communicating.

If she is elderly she probably is at the "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" stage or attitude. I agree with you though. You go to another country you need to learn to speak the languages.

It's not that easy to learn a language. May be she needs time and a good teacher to learn it.

I hope she's able to get whatever she needs accomplished. I'm sure she feels quite uncomfortable not being able to understand English. Perhaps someone will be able to assist her so that she's able to get her paperwork taken care of.

It must be really hard to function without being able to speak English! It's good she has people who try to help her, maybe she'll learn some English soon.

Being born and raised in the United States - my first language learned was Vietnamese. I learned English in school and picked the language up quicker as oppose to this lady who is older. Since the lady is older now, I think she doesn't see the purpose of learning English because she would have to start back to the basics. But the general terms should be learn ~ like words you would need to use when you visit a foreign country typically. Hopefully her other friends/mates were able to assist her. I wonder why they don't room her with someone who is bilingual so communication is much easier?

well, languages are not easy, me, I'd try, but depending on where and how, I might never really get the language down
