Tanning beds.....

What are your opinions on tanning beds? This is usually the time of year when I start tanning, mostly for appearance purposes. But I have always thought about doing it over the winter as well. My psychiatrist suggested using a tanning bed a couple times a week during the winter months to help with depression. Of course there are the bad health risks as well, which I never hear the end of it when my mom finds out I am tanning every year. But I always feel a little bit more upbeat when I am done with my tanning season. So in my mind, does the health risks out weigh the mental benefits. So what do you think? Are you totally against tanning? Or do you see the benefits in it?

I have read that being under the sun isn't good for the skin. But I love out door activities. I love going to the beach, swimming under the sea, and cycling on my road bike and my mountain bike. And I live in a country where it's summer all year long! So I have no idea about tanning beds but I have read that using tanning lotions are much better. I think it would be better to do something else that you enjoy that entails less health risk.

You make a good point....I enjoy being outside too so I will always be in the sun one way or another....I think tanning beds are worse though...

I used to do it back in the 80's, but I get a better tan on my bike.

@T_gray - Of course, it's just my arms, legs, and face, but still a good tan.

I'm not against tanning but I've seen in the news people who went way overboard using those tanning beds. I'm sure this doesn't happen to you.

I am from a culture where perfectly sun kissed tanned people bathe in papaya soap to get pinkish pale skin because the standard of beauty here is different. I have nothing against tanning at all, People can do everything what they believe to enhance their appearance. If you look good, You feel good.

I have had a skin cancer scare and have the scar to show for it. Luckily it wasn't cancerous, but the scar is pretty nasty. And my dad actually did have skin cancer so I know about it up close and personal. I know the heat feels so nice on your skin and probably would help your depression, but a nice hot bath just might do the same thing.

I am totally against tanning. I guess I've read too many articles about the dangers of tanning beds.

I'm against tanning although I do know that some white people love the look. Tanning exposes our skin to cancer. It's funny how most Asians find your white pale skin beautiful while the White people prefer a darker skin tone (sorry I had to generalize on this). Perhaps consider purchasing a SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) light or lamp to regulate your moods during winter months.

I could say? well that does not exist in Venezuela, a Latin American country where we all have natural tans every month of the year LOL! I sometimes think that this world is parallel, you spend on tanning and we in sunscreens and protective creams rinse and treatments for dry skin for being a tropical country. Amazing.

I have not done tanning before, and it is not very common in my country. I am not against tanning, but I prefer to look fair and healthy. I find that when your skin is tan, you sometimes end up looking older than your actual age... and I really prefer to look young.
