I can't say that I don't understand why. People are switching to streaming services that are cheaper, or they are just using free online services to watch shows and movies. Here is an article to detail more about it.
We have cable here but I don't use it, I have netflix and amazon instant video and prefer it. THe rest of the family watches the cable and / or netflix.
Also, I thought Sky was Internet as well?
Customers will have to up to £30 more a year for their TV when the price rises come in on June 1, 2016

Sky is a satellite tv service that also offers broadband and phone services.
I don't have it but my sister does and it is good
The basic package is around £20 per month but goes way higher if you add movies and sports.
My sis has the top package excluding sports which basically means no premiership football.
Here in the UK we have only a few tv companies across the whole country.
Sky which is satellite, virgin which is cable and freeview which is digital and free.

@Mike197602 I've heard whispers of agitation because of the BBC so I guess that is why. I can't remember where I heard it but it's been some years ago now. I'll occasionally come across a vlogger complaining about the internet upload speed and how it can be dodgy at best.
The BBC is like our PBS I think. We do get BBC America here but what is annoying is that we can't get some shows / news from the BBC website. I guess thats why, we don't pay a tax so we don't get to access it :(

@ScribbledAdNauseum how the BBC is funded is an issue here, not a massive one currently but I do think it will get bigger.
The BBC is the oldest national broadcasting company and one of the most respected even though it does get accused of being left leaning.
Also we have channel 4 that is a public service channel but has adverts which the BBC don't have.
Even many UK people don't know how channel 4 works.
I know you'd like a lot of our programs here that you don't get in the US.
Purely for experimental reasons I'm going to leave a link to BBCiplayer and see if you can watch it.
Let me know the result then I'll look at work arounds
Watch live BBC TV channels, catch up on TV programmes you missed and view exclusive content on BBC iPlayer.

also we have to pay a tv license fee here which you don't have in the US...everybody has to pay and it funds the BBC.

You are quite right, Sky does also provide an internet package and a telephone line service as well.
I have not used sky for almost 20 years now. When I bought the house it was new, so had no aerial fitted at the time. While out looking for a new television I noticed a special offer for Sky, which was free box and setup. This seemed an easy solution, so I took the basic package on a 2 year contract.
There were only 3 channels that I watched regular, but just after 2 years all three of them changed to premium channels, thus leaving me with nothing of interest. To make matters worse, they sent me a letter stating that the basic package would rise by around 50%. There was no chance that I would pay an extra 50% and then extra for other channels, so I had an aerial fitted and terminated Sky altogether.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The aerial will receive Freeview channels, which actually gives me about 100 to choose from.

@Asylum Oh wow, do not quote me on this but I believe our antenna only picks up like 40?

I am guessing your terminology for aerial would be just our basic antenna that picks up the local news stations and maybe a free broadcasting station as well?
T.v.'s gimmicks are definitely not a new thing. THey create packaged deals and then start taking channels away and claiming it's a premium package that only cost $5.00 more, and that's where they cast the line to reel us in.
We have one of the most basic cable packages linked in with the internet. I wouldn't know the price as our expenses are divided and it's not my responsibility to pay for the service.

I have about ten pages in, around, and about the UK that I've liked on facebook. This article came from one of those pages. It's for the UK and so we don't have the service here in the US

That's a shame. My guess is they are going to lose customers because of it.

It is not really any different than what they do with our cable / satellite providers here. Yes, they probably will lose customers. Of course I imaigne part of the spike in price is because they've already lost so many.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I know they lost me with their high prices. I love my Netflix and if I miss a show, my son has Hulu plus or if I wait a week I can watch it on free Hulu.

I am not sure how much our package deal is as I don't have to pay it. Netflix is good but sometimes it doesn't have the things I like to watch. You can do a trial version though and even get something like the Roku and have the option to use several different subscription services. You will be paying for each subscription service though. However, I believe with the roku you can get your local news. We have time warner here and I was watching the news this morning when they mentioned getting their app on the roku.

@cindiowens Do you have all the bells and whistles? DVR etc? We have the generic boxes and then we have the high speed internet.
