He lost his rare coin...

This homeless client that I work with at my volunteer gig recently found this ultra rare coin. Hoprfully the picture I attached comes up. Its an 1804 Indian Penny he found while walking. The other day he had shown it to me and we took pictures of it and we were going to try to sell it on eBay or a coin site for him. We never got past taking the picture as the center had to close and we never got to research it further so he held onto it. I saw him again yesterday and he told me he lost it. I did some digging of my own and found out this penny sold for between $1700-$2000. I did NOT tell him this. I find myself heartbroken for him. He lives in a tent. This could have served as a short term ticket out of homelessness. I hope he finds it. Anyway. I had to share that. Have you ever found and sold a rare coin? Or found and then lost it? Do share!

I have never had a particularly rare coin, but have some interesting ones. A friend of mine bought an old postal order many years ago and was given a coin along with it. He could not decide what it was so he gave it to me. It was a small bronze issue of the Gallic Emperor Tetricus II. I have no idea whatever happened to it.

Cool! I have no idea what that is but it certainly sounds cool. Did you see if it was worth anything?

@maezee It was worth very little because a great number of them were struck. Of course it was of great interest and dates back almost 1800 years.

@Asylum ah. But even if its not worth anything I bet it was still a cool relic.

I have never found a rare coin much less sell one. It would be interesting to know where he found the coin. Strange indeed for such a coin to be lying around.

I dont think he stole it if thats what you may be implying, he is a nice guy. I never find money on the ground but then again I am not outside as much as people who live outside.

@maezee No, I wasn't implying he stole the coin. But was it by an old house? Did it get washed down the street? There's a story to that coin. That's what is fascinating.

I feel sorry for him but the amount and value of coins depends on rarity and condition, he found it outside so I'm thinking it wasn't in super condition. he would have got some good money for it but I'm not sure if that much

I don't think I've ever even seen a rare coin. How sad for that man that he lost it.
