Well folks don't despair, maybe you are in fact doing the 150 minutes of moderate activity each week recommended without realising it. A set of volunteers at England's Birmingham University performed a variety of household tasks while attached to special heart rate and movement monitors to see whether they could count as moderate physical activity. The list of chores tested included mopping, vacuuming, mowing, car washing.cleaning windows , planting flowers, ironing and dusting . All but the last two would count towards the total and even ironing and dusting use more than twice as much energy as sitting still! These volunteers spent an average of 37 minutes a week vacuuming and mopping and a further 72 minutes doing outside chores. So they are already doing about two thirds of the moderate activity advised to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and obesity. Other tasks which would count but did not feature in the survey include brisk walking, cycling, carrying shopping and hanging up laundry, The doctors suggest that this housework is spread through the week as the benefits of some activities may only last for 12 or 14 hours. Additional benefit can be gotten if you do some simple exercises throughout your day, but that will be another discussion. Is this good news for you ?

I try to get a workout anyplace I can. While I watch the kids in their activities, I pace, it helps get those steps in. When I help kids with their homework I stand and step in place. I hope it all helps me get to my target weight eventually

Yes it is very good Janet. Thats all one needs to do is work to get rid of excess instead of paying gyms big money to do so.

Good news indeed - thank you Janet. I don't do a lot of housework, but I walk a fair bit and do a lot of gardening.

I was pleasantly surprised that just planting flowers would burn up the calories. I too love pottering in my garden

All the chores used up calories at three times the rate of sitting!

Yes, I now don't feel so guilty that I don't go to the gym. I do like to keep my apartment clean and I don't have to go anywhere.

marvellous news, what about wall paper scrapping and being my husbands assistant. Making tea and running around finding his tools. That is on top of my usual housework.

Didn't need that to know that when we move our body we do help our heart and our lungs.

Yes as long as we keep active we will be less likely to have an early end

I guess I better get busy cleaning the house so it will help with my exercise program.
