The Mission (known as The Mission UK here in the States) formed in the 1980's when vocalist/guitarist Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams left the Sisters of Mercy after that band's debut record.
The Mission were considered one of goth's top band's, despite obvious arena rock tendencies (in an old interview, Hussey said he never minded the "goth" tag but always aspired for more for his band.)
"Wasteland," according to Hussey, was the first song the band ever played live as The Mission. The link below takes you to the official video. Don't let the term "goth" scare you away. It's a goth classic, sure, but not in the "slit your wrists" sense that non-goth's tend to associate with the genre.
Listen for Craig Adams' killer bass line:
1987) Derided by critics as pompous, melodramatic, and bombastic, the Mission, as they were known in their native U.K. (their name had to be changed in Ameri...

He is an underrated bassist, as far as I'm concerned, and not just because they are my favorite band.

This was used in a Miami Vice episode. You might have heard "Deliverance" or "Tower of Strength" somewhere.

I agree with you that they certainly don't sound "goth." I've been listening to them on You Tube ("Serpent's Kiss" is playing even as I type) and they hardly sound like a stereotypical "goth band."
But that's the problem with letting people who don't really know much about music typecast bands. A lot of people call the Louvin Brothers "bluegrass," but ira despised being called "bluegrass" (despite the fact that he actually loved Bill Monroe's music!). People saw a mandolin and said, "Oh, must be bluegrass." I guess that makes R.E.M. bluegrass, too, because Peter Buck played mandolin on "Losing My Religion" and "You Are the Everything."

People like to classify All About Eve as goth (no doubt because of their ties to The Mission) when, if anything, they were a folky sort of goth. Took everyone by surprise when they released a really good shoegazer album.

I always describe them as "an arena-rock band trapped in a goth band's body." But yeah, that is my favorite band, right there.
