Yes, it is Taco Bell, but it is a JOB!!!

My son finally secured a job after searching for over a month for employment. He pounded the pavement, went to the local employment office, made out applications, and waited. He heard nothing.
He had one interview at Taco Bell. Following the interview he said that it didn't look promising. He answered the questions with ease and felt he did well, but overall he didn't get good vibes about the interview itself. I told him not to read more into it. Just wait, hope, and pray.
Well, he did get the job. No, he isn't going to get rich from the money he will make, but he will be paid for working. Hopefully they will give him enough hours so he will be able to save money for an apartment and be able to support himself on the meager wages.
Not every adult is able to secure a high paying job. Minimum wage is insulting. People cannot make a true living working such low paying jobs. Many states are pushing for mandatory wage increases for fast food workers. They call it a livable wage.
There are those that believe that this will also be problematic for small business owners if the minimum wage were to go up. There needs to be a happy medium.
I am proud of my son for securing employment. I just wish it paid more.

He has tried to get a job in manufacturing, but has little to no experience with it. He has been rejected quite a few times.

Cost of housing is crazy here and then to have to buy food and other necessities, you just don't have enough when you get paid minimum wage.

@ElusiveButterfly I feel that this really is so discouraging to people when you are honestly working and cant survive on the wage.

There are always jobs open in the fast food business. However, I believe that they are becoming more selective in who they hire. Too often someone starts a job and then leaves too quickly.
My thought is if they paid them more than minimum wage it would be incentive for them to stay.

@LadyDuck I know that in NY they want to increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

@ElusiveButterfly The low wages are surely not an incentive to stay, but if they increases the wages, they need to increase the prices and then they lose customers. We have a bad economy in our days.

He isn't supposed to start until Saturday. Today he informed me that he has a couple of other options that may pan out too. One pays a bit more as well.
Either way, I hope that it will be a job he can stick with as well.

good on him to willing to take a job just to pay for the bills.
I know some people won't and tbh I never understood that, a job is a job.
paying bills is paying bills.

@Drosophila oh and I know many that will do that. When I was unemployed for a year, I took a job at Dunkin Donuts. It only lasted one day. I was unable to tolerate working with the other staff members. They were rude, inconsiderate, and thought it hilarious to make fun of other people. I was fortunate to find the job that I am currently employed in. That was 10 years ago.

@ElusiveButterfly Respect to him!
I always have respect for people who will take a job to get themselves into a better state, than someone who sits around and complains about the world.

He is 32. Have had a couple of setbacks in his life, but is moving forward. If a minimum wage job is all there is, it is what he will do until something better comes along.

That's good that he got a job, no matter what it is. He should be proud of himself too! I never think any interviews go well usually, they have such a poker face usually-it is hard to tell.

I know that poker face all too well. Why a poker face for a fast food job? He really felt like he wasn't going to get the job.

@ElusiveButterfly I do not really get it either, it's silly to me but most bosses do it for some reason, no matter where it is.

One of my sons worked at Mc Donalds while he was in collage. He was a good worker and stayed there for a long time. He also shared an appointment with three other kids and was able to pay rent. My other son got on a landscape crew and liked it so much he quit college...Fast food won't make your son enough to live well but it will look good on his resume. He should be thinking ( while getting some experience at this job) of a job he would like to do for a long time (better wages) like landscaping, greenhouse work, wineries, newspapers ..

I'm glad your son has found a job. Even though it doesn't pay much it's still an honest way of making a living. He should not lose hope and maybe still continue finding a good job while working for Taco Bell. Maybe one day he'll finally get his dream job.

@jahunt the last time I had KFC it was really not to my liking. The chicken was greasy and dry, and the gravy was like paste. Gagged me.

Good for him. You gotta start somewhere. There are probably a lot of management opportunities to work up to once he gains some tenure. With a big company like that probably a lot of opportunities! I drove by a Taco Bell in my area that was hirinf and it had a big sign that said "up to $12 an hour" which is good for fast food but nit sure which position that was for. Best of luck to him!

Thank you maezee. I am sure that if it is meant for him to go further with this company, it will be. If not, there are other places that will hire him once he has proven his ability to stay on.

Actually he can aim higher.
If he can work towards the goal of being a franchise owner, he will find motivation in the work.
Many ex-fast food workers worked their way to become a store manager, and in the end, they become the franchise owners.
They know the work inside out, and they are paid so much more.

It was the first interview he had in a month. I just found out that he may have the opportunity to work at our local Friendly's. That isn't a positive though and will accept the Taco Bell if this one doesn't pan out. The job at Friendly's would pay more.
