Poisonous Spam - why are people so desperate for a fraction of a cent that they do this?

I've recently become a volunteer on a UK-based cancer charity forum. My role is to welcome people, point them to the most relevant groups and to help the admins to clean up the spam or alert the medical staff to potential suicides. Every day I'm absolutely baffled by the callous exploitation of the site by people attempting to post spam.
We have regular posts from an idiot who's spamming kitchen furniture. I wonder if he/she imagines that some poor soul who just lost their husband or wife or has just been told they're going to die is going to think "Hey! Life could be immeasurably improved with some new kitchen units".
I can only assume those particular spammers are just shoving their unwelcome posts without any consideration for the setting. What I find more annoying are the snake oil salesmen - the idiots pushing their ridiculous 'herbal cures' and alternative therapies. Yesterday I saw a spammer from Bulgaria pushing her 'Aloe Vera' products at people for whom they had no value. One poor woman posted that her husband had been paralysed by the collapse of part of his cancer-ridden spine. Up popped Miss Aloe Vera with a chirpy "Hey, have you tried aloe vera?"
I was tempted to tell her to take that idea and put it where the poor rectal and anal patients have to put so many of their products.

It can't be helped, there's just too many like them these days. but in my case i would report if they are found guilty of any kind of violation here.

Reminds me of my 'friend' who sold Herbalife. Whether or not she actually believed that it cured everything under the planet, she was able to rhyme off some very dangerous 'advice' about how herbalife would cure my depression and would be able to regulate my blood sugar levels so I wouldn't suffer from the effects of PCOS if I just bought the crap from her.
I think some people genuinely believe that these products work, or they are just so greedy for money that they will spam everywhere hoping to make a sale.

Spammers are not picky on where to post their garbage. If a forum have a high traffic, they will target it. I think they also wanted to target the lurkers. Some of them are not humans, they were just bots than randomly registers to any forum. So yeah confronting them is useless. it is better to report them so their post will be deleted. I think they were being insensitive on that forum because they were just bots.

Oh my gosh, it sounds like really insensitive people. That is just awful and really sad. I wish people would think more before they write or speak.

People can be insensitive when trying to sell products. They should really think of the person who is actually suffering from these diseases before posting such things. On the other hand, there are some really legitimate alternative therapies that can help a person deal with cancer. I have some experience with things that have helped.
