Today, my mom's friend gave her several boxes of delicious Kuih which we enjoyed as an after meal dessert. The ones you see in the picture are namely: -Kuih Lapis (Steamed Layer Cake) -Kuih Salat (Coconut Pandans Custard Glutinous Rice Cake) -Kuih Bingka (Tapioca Cake) -Kuih Sago Lapis (Steamed Sago Layer Cake) Kuihs are bite sized Asian steamed pastries that are mostly sweet, although some are savory. Their main ingredients include fresh coconut milk, pandan leaves and palm sugar. The cooking method (i.e. steaming) and ingredients used in Kuihs differentiate them from Western pastries in taste, texture and appearance. Kuihs are fragrant, creamy and melts in your mouth. Have you eaten Kuih before? My favorite's Kueh Kosui (Steamed Palm Sugar Cake)! Photo: The Kuihs were Delicious =D

Interesting, you call them pastries, but they look chewy to me like candy. What is the texture of them?

@Ladypeace But it's still considered pastry?

@fishtiger58 I find it odd too that they call them pastries and cakes. But by western pastry standards they don't seem to make the category.

When you bite into them its soft, smooth, mildly chewy and melts in your mouth.

I have not had the pleasure, but I love the flavor that coconut milk adds to recipes. Those Kuihs look delicious!

They're are tasty, and most importantly the coconut milk needs to be the fresh ones - not from the packet or can.

Yes, I have - I'm quite familiar with them especially Kuih Lapis or the rainbow-colored layer ones.

I know that you've lived and worked in Indonesia, they must be delicious over there. Indonesian kuihs are the best. An Indonesian friend gave us a box of Kuih Lapis Legit bought from a famous place in their home town and it tasted heavenly.

They're delicious only if they're fresh. These coconut pudding like cakes have a short shelve life. They sometimes can be too rich and filling for people to take as a dessert.

I have never tried Kuih before but it looks like some Vietnamese desserts I have eaten but I don't know the exact name on the top of my head right now though. Looks very delicious! I didn't have dessert today after dinner ~ maybe tomorrow hehe.

Sapin sapin looks absolutely delicious. I think they're about similar with our kuih lapis and yeah they can be eaten as afternoon tea.

Not yet. We also have rice cakes here in my country but not as colorful as those you have in SG. I love those rainbow cakes!
