Short dresses are back in fashion

I go by what suits me and not what the trend setters want me to follow.
Short dresses I see are back in fashion but I feel they are not meant for those with skinny or ill-shaped legs.
Talking about fashion I think everyone should keep in mind that not everything suits them. Following a trend mindlessly can make on look ugly to say the least. Gathered skirts are ok for those who are slim and vertical stripes also suit those who are slim. But when 'heavy weights' wear such clothes they tend to look heavier.
So what's your take? Trendy or you wear what suits you? You could be the lucky one if trendy clothes suit you - a perfect combination.
My legs are not meant for show and so I can never wear short dresses.
The legs in the picture are those of some guests that attended a party at my friend's place a long time ago

There is a time for everything. Pigtails are meant for kids for example
Did you have nice legs to show?

I believe nothing should go out of fashion. It should be obligatory for fashion designers to come up with what is suitable for climate and conditions rather than something they declare as fashionable and trendy for the moment and which suddenly looks outdated within a couple of years. That makes me feel like an idiot being dictated about trends. I wear what I am comfortable with. I don't give a damn what another person wears so long as he or she is comfortable with what he or she is wearing. Fashionable clothing do not for me define a person.

I love fashion. It's in my blood. I've modeled and taught modeling, so I have fashion sense and know what looks good and bad on me, and on others. I mentally critique almost every woman I see. I can't help myself. I used to read the do's and don't's section in Glamour magazine years ago and got everything right at first glance.

@allknowing ..I don't know about her, but I combine the anarkalis with dhotis, patialas, or salwars rather than churidars. Do I look odd? Of course. But hey, somebody just copied me on that ...there is a new serial in which the leading lady wears anarkalis with salwars. Now that makes me ahead of them. lol. My reason is simple..I sweat a lot and so I don't need those leggings. In winters I wear leggings and above that the palazzos. lol. I always did that when I was young so what is the big deal. Palazzos have come into fashion now. I kind of stopped wearing trousers and shirts after my landlord's son remarked that he never saw anybody who looked so much at ease in pants and shirts. That is what I used to wear in hostels..so it never occurred to me that I was the odd man out in my surroundings. It was a gentle reminder that I needed to fit in the conservative environment. lol. I tried and thankfully there are enough options now. :) I hate sarees.

I don't go for trendy clothes. I only wear clothes I'm comfortable with. I don't wear short dresses/shorts. If I have to wear a dress, it's a corporate one.

@allknowing I guess one need not worry about what others say, ..however I agree that we need to dress according to occasion and also keep in mind whether a dress looks good, compliments you ..

I only wear short dresses if there is an occassion. I feel intimadated when people look on my legs. My friends will always ask me why not to flaunt my legs because it is white and smooth but even though it looks good I still feel shy. I am more comfortable wearing pants, slacks or jeans. It makes me move more comfortably and I think that is what matters.

@allknowing It is true. Not all those men around us are gentlemen. Some are really naughty and will take advantage of us.

Pants do make movement easy and comfortable while short dresses cause problems inasmuch as one needs to be careful while corssing one's legs for example

I do not follow trends, I wear what I think is good for me. I wore the mini skirts when they were in fashion in the 70s, because I know that I have nice legs. Now I still wear skirts and dresses but not too short, I am no more a young girl (my legs are still nice).

Anna, there is something I need to ask from you about this. I have an aunt. She is 81. She will be traveling by plane. We wear sarees out here. Trust me there can't be anything that is more difficult to manage than that. We have to be constantly managing part of it that goes over one of the shoulders. At home, it can be pulled around the waist and the edge gets stuffed into one side of the skirt. But once a person is outside, it is not considered to be good, and poor lady struggles with that being a hindrance and so also the handbag, which, as you know with age seems heavier. She also had some leg fractures so she is unsure of climbing those stairs. She would rather her hand be free from managing the saree which keeps coming between her legs and at other end the open end I wrote above about. Now comes the real problem. She wants to wear salwar kameez and there is sort of opposition. Everybody is calling it fashion. They are trying to tell me it will be inconvenient for her to use the restroom. I am trying to tell them, once in the flight, she can opt to change into maxis, and when she wants to get down those steps, she can revert to salwar kameez WITHOUT THAT STOLE called chunni. Oh boy, people don't listen to logic...oh no. They want to force their thinking without the considering even the discomfort of the elderly lady. They are calling her fashion conscious. With her age, she shouldn't be thinking about it. Hell, it is her money. Who are they to dictate. It is her need. Who are we to dictate. World makes me mad at times. What is your opinion? I don't think age should be dictating what we wear. We should be wearing what we like and we are comfortable in.

Even my legs are not worth showing . I too feel comfortable in trousers and a shirt or t shirt. I do wear a pant suit on occasions.

@allknowing I have dodgy knees so think they're best to keep hidden! I'm also a bit bigger than I would like to be and don't think my fat legs are something people want to see

I never go with a 'trend' @allknowing . In my youth, I work mini-skirts; not because they were in fashion, but because they looked good on me (I was a dancer so I had nice legs). Now that my body looks like someone who spent time in a concentration camp, I'm covered up.

@allknowing I'm still all in one piece but I keep losing weight and I don't know why. I'm down to 110 pounds now (at 5'8"); all of my clothes are falling off. The last MRI was horrible; the spinal cord had narrowed to 6mm in the lumbar area. It may not be too long before the spinal cord is severed. Outside of that, I'm just hunkey-dorie.

@allknowing Yes, I am past my prime, but I am always appreciative of beauty and talent. If you think that legs are the end of the world, think about noses and lips. There are many things that do not follow the natural laws. But certainly legs are the place to start. Keep smiling.

Over here, young gals watch Korea shows, and they like to follow the fashion trend.
That means wearing trendy short skirts, and I personally think the skirts are too short.
It looks good on the Korea actresses, but then they are actresses with nice legs.

I like what I like and do not worry about trends. If I like what is trendy, then it makes it easier to find clothes when I need or want new ones, but that is about it. There are some seasons when I just can't find anything that I like, which gets frustrating when I need to replace a few items in my wardrobe.
I do agree that all styles are not suited to all body types and might not appeal to all people, even if it is suited to his or her body type.

As @ItsAmbs here has pointed out anything goes provided it is worn with confidence and I am sure you have a lot of confidence that you could defy trends and come out with something of your own. What will that something be?
