This has happened many times that I have lend money and didn't get it back on the promised date and I have to run after the person to get back my own money.
But this time I denied a fellow who was asking to lend him money and reason he gave that his mother has to undergo an eye surgery for that he needs money.
At first I thought I should give him but when I enquired in my office people asked me not to lend him as he has borrowed money from many of his colleagues and haven't returned yet.
This fellow has a habit of borrowing money and not to give back. I am thankful that I did not lend but I am surprised whY people do that. Why this person is spoiling his image as when he will require money in reality no one is going to give him if does like this.

I have encountered people like him. When they needed the money, they were so docile. But when time to pay came, they even had the nerve to be angry. Saying that they should be given consideration.

Maybe he is in a very tight money situation because of the mother's eye operation .

There will come a day when no one will lend money to this guy anymore. What is he going to do then, steal? I suppose he would be tempted to do that because he's obviously not an honest and sincere person, so keep an eye on him whenever he's around!

I know of this mental man, that ask every one for money, every month after he uses up his check, people are on to him now, and they have stopped helping him, all because he is not a person, who will pay you back, he will hold his money in the bank, and then ask you for money, and won't pay you back.

Sometimes we have to be cruel in order to be kind. If no one stands up for themselves then he'd keep doing it. Borrowing money and abusing people's kindness. I admire your guts for refusing to lend him money.
If it was me I'd probably lend him money because I'm too afraid to offend people.

Fortunately you are smart enough to ask around.
it will be awful if you lend him money.
I think in future, you can stop lending money.
You will have more friends if you stop lending money.
Those who want to borrow money from you will not see you as a friend anyway.

Really you have to put your foot down like this. I think you must care for your money.
