Have you heard about an inspiring man called Ron Finley? He is from South Central Los Angeles and having decided to grow some vegetables on the strip of land , called the parkway, between the pavement and the road in front of his home. The area had been used for dumping trash, but the city council tried to stop him growing food. However in the end he won and In two years he created a small ecosystem with fruit trees . He wanted to inspire people to use their own backyards to cultivate and cook good fresh food. A new film "Can You Dig This?"also follows several others who have got into gardening . One young girl , 9 year old Quimonie not only grows food for her family in the projects, but has also started a stall selling things she has grown thus bringing in much needed income and making good fresh vegetables available to her neighbours. Community gardens are springing up all over and much profound change has happened as a result . The film makers will try to arrange a sowing in your city if you contact them by going to canyoudigthisfilm.com where there is a screenings tab. Good idea? Know anything similar? http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b074vw96

I have read about this Janet. It is wonderful alright. Why they always try to block these ideas is mad to me. I have read where they are growing gardens on top of homeless shelter roofs.

I suspect that government thinks it is their land and that no one should be allowed to feel able to use it as they please. Nice to hear about the roof gardens

@TiarasOceanView I guess we need some sort of government, but they do need to be responsive and forward thinking

Quite innovative if you ask me. But may be growing flowers will be easier. That way land that is used to grow flowers would be spared to grow food. Flowers can then be used from homes and other places to give bouquets and whatever purposes.

@Auntylou ... My reason was slightly different. People could fight for whatever is grown.

It is true that food grown near highways can be polluted by traffic fumes so flowers might be a possibility in such places

What a wonderful movement. We should grow fresh veggies. That's great. Ron starting something and others are following. The 9 year old is doing something awesome. Helping her family and lowering the cost for groceries.

There is a small town in the north of England where this idea has also taken off brilliantly

Flowering plants would be best as it would give a pleasing look to the surroundings too.

So very nice project. It can save much money from buying veggies and fruits, but people can enjoy home-grown, organic vegetables that are free from chemicals. You can use kitchen wastes as fertilizer like fruit peels, or vegetable leaves and stems. Can contribute also to the environment.

It is such a good idea on so many levels. We have a small town in the UK called Todmorton where people grow veg and fruit in all sorts of public places which is free to passers by.

I heard something about him on the television. What an inspiring man. One person can make a difference and educate people in growing their own food on any land available. A wonderful idea.

Our village has allowed people who live into apartments to use free land to grow their vegetables. There are about 80 allotments for the moment, but the plan to add more using free areas.

This is very forward thinking. In the UK we have lots of allotments, but in some cases local authorities have sold the land for development of housing

That is a great idea. I am glad he persevered. Many towns do plant berry trees on the boulevard or in parks. I don't see many people using the berries though. More for my husband and me.

I have seen such things on British TV shows so I think it's more prevalent there than here. Even if not growing fruits and vegetables such areas could have trees, plants and flowers.

I was going to say I thought someone did this in New York, but it very well could have been the same little girl.
