You might think of Lesbians when you read this discussion

I assure you that not all female husbands are what they seem. Some are even seen to the world as men. I was reading an article on listverse that listed ten "female husbands" of history. Women whom dressed as men for whatever reason. Some to earn more money, others to escape abusive or dangerous situations. The ones listed do not talk of actual lesbian women, but they do mention several women whom, after finding out their husbands were men, were just as content to stay with them. I will link the article below but I wanted to give my own thoughts on this. I find that an article like this is very interesting. It is not something we perceive to have happened in centuries past. Sure we've heard a time or two where a woman dressed up to be a man to earn more money. I've never heard of any who did so to get away from an abusive situation, or like one lady, because she was raise das a man. That latter part actually makes me think of a book I once read but that's a bit off the subject. These little "oddities" and "Taboos" make us realize that our perception of the lives of our ancestors are far off. I know that personally I've always thought that people living in the 1700 and 1800's are god fearing, simple tradesmen who live off the land and stick to their morals and roles. To see that the "women folk" were more bawsy then meets the eye, well that just makes me smile.
Think gay marriage is a new concept? Newspapers from the 1800s reveal this couldn’t be further from the truth. Although our 19th-century ancestors seemed t

The people of both sexes have always lived together. They called themselves cousins , sisters or brothers. They just did not talk about it.

You think so? We (as a society) are meant to think that homosexuality is very new. Even in the 80's and prior it wasn't really talked about, it was very taboo.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Homosexuality has always existed. They used to cover it up and because no one talked about it no one knew. It was an innocent time . Like the old saying " What you don't know won't hurt you". I have always been unsure why people are so concerned what other people get up to. As long as you are happy who cares. I am happily married to a man. That is not the only way to live.

@suzzy3 I think a lot of the reasoning behind those who are against homosexuality has to do with the bible. I coudln't begin to quote scripture as I am not a very religious person, but that does seem to be what everyone's reasoning for hating homosexuals is. That just irks me, those who use the bible as a means to be against something. I"m not saying they don't have the right to their beliefs and opinions but it's sad the closed mindedness of it!

Many times in history, women have needed to use men´s names to hide what they did. Did you know that the Bronte Sisters used men´s pseudonims? When Jane Eyre was first published, the author was a Currer Bell.

Really? No I wasn't aware of that. I also didn't think about the literary aspect. There are probably many more old publications out there that were written by a woman instead of a man.

Back in the day I am sure that those women were not accepted into society as they are more so today.

The article talks a little bit about that. One had an excerpt from a supposed newspaper article of that time wherein a man claimed women just simply could not do a man's job. He even went on to say that a potential thief might think he'd stepped into an insane asylum, had he ventured into the bedrrom where the two females lay. No, women were thought to bare the children, raise them, and do "womanly duties and chores."

@ElusiveButterfly That would have been an entirely different scandal altogether! I don't know if they would have attributed gays to being "weak" as homophobic people today do.

In the 1800's men and women were not openly gay.

No they were not, but even so, this article only had one or two instances where the women said they were fine staying as housemates with the other woman. Of course there is no mention of what might have transpired behind doors, as well there shouldn't.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Some of the women who opted to stay were threatened and were physicaly abused by their female husbands. Shame i think is also one contributing factor to why they choose to stay.

@TiarasOceanView I used to have a Laura Ingells Book but I think I sold it when I was hard up for cash. I loved watching the series though. I also watch Highway to Heaven (I think was the name), Touched by an Angel, and my favorite Dr. Quinn MEdicine Woman.

Ocean you know how much of a romantic I am. I like the ideals and ideas of what life was portrayed as. I think a lot of my thinking on the way things were is attributed to Little House on The Prarie!

I've read about women pretending to be men throughout history for economic and political reasons. I've also read stories of women pretending to be men so they could enlist in the army and fight, either because the believed so strongly in the cause, to be close to their husbands, or to make money.

I personally always admire women who dressed as men, but I actually interested romatically with real men. But I can say that I love the way women look with men's clothes, if she's pretty, then she will look beautiful/handsome as men, some kind of masculine but with feminine features.

I am also interested in men but can appreciate a woman's body and the way she wears her clothes. Those women who take pictures wearing a men's business suit and hat look very smart and regal.

Very interesting article indeed .. thanks for sharing .. it reminds of the article I read about one of the popes that turned out to be a woman.. they thought he put on weight but he was actually pregnant and have given birth to a healthy baby ..this happened during the early years of the Roman Catholic church .. I must look for that article ..

As a gay man I laugh at "living in the 1700 and 1800's are god fearing, " like there were no gays in the 1700s and 1800s--we have always been around. What the heck does 'bawsy' mean??? LOL

You may have always been around but not always able to be so open. You've never heard of the term "bawsy" ? It's can actually be a person's nickname too. "bawsy" is like daring.

This reminds of the Disney movie Mulan. She dressed up like a man to save her father from being drafted.

I haven't seen Mulan in a long time and I think even so maybe only once or twice. I am sure Disney got the plot from reading articles from History, maybe even from the original Walt's family history even!
