Bra is a shorten version of the original garment called brassiere
the word Brassiere once meant Bodice.
http://www.yaelf.com/aueFAQ/mifititzlingbrassir.shtml
The word is attributed to Phillippe de Brassiere who was said to be Frenchmen who developed the modern bra.
The reason for the word panties, as in pants, or pantaloons, and can be used as pantie or panties, plural or not.

YOU MAKE A GOOD POINT, ALTHOUGH TECHNICALLY YOU HAVE TO BUT CHEEKS YOU ARE SHOVING INTO YOUR PANTIES SO MAYBE THAT WOULD BE THE REASON FOR THAT ONE.
