When I was 5 years old in school I got nit and lice. My parents cut my hair short so they could get rid of my head lice. Now that I am a mother of three girls that was my fear. That they get nits and lice at school. Guess what? My six year old girl came home with nits !!! I was going to die! My first case of head lice as a mother. Thousands of questions came to me. I called my mom to ask how I would get rid of those lice. And I got many home remedies. One being vinegar. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. lol The vinegar entered through my daughters nose and out through her mouth and according to her it tasted bad! She laughed and cried at the same time. OMG! lol But finally I went to CVS pharmacy and they helped me choose a lice shampoo. Then, I went straight home and apply the shampoo. As it was dark I couldn't see if they were coming out as I was combing her hair. I didn't see anything. Today, I combed her hair and again, I couldn't see any nits or lice. I just hope that I imagined them or that they are ALL gone! Praying that in the name of Jesus I get no more cases of nits and lice! Oh wait! I have a 6 months old that still has to go thru elementary school!!! :) SMH!!!

Unfortunately it can be a problem in primary schools here too... Using a nit comb and special shampoos can help, but you have to keep checking as they can come back as fast as you get rid of them if the school has a problem with them. Using a nit comb while conditioner is on the hair can get them out quite effectively as the conditioners makes it so they can't escape! Shampoos that have a high concentration of Tea Tree oil in them are brilliant as fleas and lice hate the stuff, so it can make a good preventative measure (and doesn't smell too bad either. Good luck in keeping your daughter nit free :D

@amnerisc I had to deal with them with my son, even though he had really short hair, and with my dog too when he went out in a field and came home with them! Yes they pop when you squash them, but I used to use the comb and my nail to squish them, it's actually harder than you'd think.

That's one of the things that challenges us mothers. When my eldest caught it from school, I immediately bought that shampoo to get rid of the lice. Just used it with her every week to make sure nothing lives.

that's why i remind my nieces not to borrow their classmates' combs, and don't let their classmates use their comb either.

When I had lice or if lice was and is going around, I would just dye my hair. Its like insta-kill lol

Oh my goodness that's terrifying. I could imagine your horror seeing your darling daughter getting the nits. Using a medicated life shampoo is the right thing to do. I hope she gets well quick.
