World Bipolar Day

It is World Bipolar Day. I hope with this day that a lot more people become aware of bipolar disorder and mental health issues in general. I am bipolar and let me tell you this..IT...SUCKS. Not many people realize it because mental health is not written on someone's face. Please, if you know someone has a mental disorder, being bipolar, having anxiety, depression. Do NOT hold it against them. Do NOT tell them to get over it. Do NOT tell them they are only wanting attention. Yes, there are many people that use these words and are jus self-diagnosing themselves and that isn't fair to the ones that really are diagnosed. Take this day and learn about what mental health is and also bipolar disorder. Perhaps you will understand it better and be able to help anyone who is going through a hard time.

@DesirousDreamer I don't think it's that they wish to be s reward up, but that they are insecure and feel they need to make excuses for themselves. But your correct - it's not nice for those who do truely suffer.

@DaintyD I have met many people who want to have a mental disorder and it is because they want attention. not really insecure per say but they want attention for the wrong reasons.

of course, it is rather frightening also how people romanticized the idea of having a mental health issue. As if they want to be screwed up. It isn't fun.

I am not bipolar, but I have had depressions for almost 20 years. It is the first time that I hear about World Bipolar Day, and I think that it is good idea. Many people don't know much about mental disorders and they don't understand what some people are going through. When I meet new people they often say that I don't seem like a person who is mentally ill, but if they saw me when I have a severe depression they would get a different impression of me.

I have known about this day for a few years and I have supported it always. People need to know about this issue and need to stop thinking it is not that big of a deal. Mental illness does not have to be written on a face because that would make it physical. I want to spread the awareness of bipolar disorder not on this day but any day and any mental illness.

My dad is diabetic and Bi-polar. You can imagine how hard it is for me growing up that I have to be understanding, tolerant and patient whenever he is being verbally abusive.

It is very true but it is a little disconcerting. Because, yes, people are fighting with their lives whether it be mental health or just average stress. On some days us soldiers will not have to eat hardtack (a flour biscuit that is hard as a rock) and will get to eat candy and write letters to a happier life and look forward to a happier life. That is how it is like with mental illness. It is looking forward to the days there is not crippling and painful, it is when the sun feels warmer and there is less grey in sight. That is not being a loser, that is just being a fighter.

It must be hard for you. I know people who are claiming they are but not properly diagnosed.

I used to go into chatrooms a lot and people would always go, "I'm bipolar! I hate my life!" And I would sit there quietly and think to myself, "sweetie...you do not even know the start of it." I am only type 1 bipolar and so I am not as bad as some can be. I have more of the depression and anxiety side than I do anger. I dated a man who was type 2 bipolar and he was borderline schizophrenic. I could see the pain that he was in, no one could fake that.

@wongchoiyee No, bipolar has different stages and a guy I dated was borderline schizophrenic because he was diagnosed as type 2 bipolar but he was way worse than that but not exactly schizophrenic.
