Let's ban texting while you're walking?

Who texts while they walk? Me me me but only if I get a text (but not engaging like back/forth since I hardly text)
Who pays attention while they walk/text? Me me me.
Who texts when they cross the street or intersection? Not me!
A New Jersey Lawmaker wants to ban texting while you're walking as it could be very dangerous. Consequences? $50 fine and up to 15 days in jail.
You can find me browsing through my phone, occasionally texting but rarely since I have no one to text really, listening to music. But when it comes to serious areas like crossing the street, intersections, in crowds - I have some common sense and will not use my phone!
Overall: I highly don't think this law will pass anytime soon. What are your thoughts?

I don't text while I walk. With or without a law punishing it, people should not be texting while walking.

I don't text where I'm glued to my phone. But if I do - its mostly at the grocery store asking my boyfriend he wants a certain type of food, etc.

@KristenH Yes - that is good you stop and look to be alert. I have seen several people not even looking when they're not doing anything but walking. Just walk straight and never look around for cars!

@infatuatedbby Yes I do. I walk on the sidewalk so I won't run into traffic on the roads. I do look both ways. I've walked and read a book in the past that I needed to finish the same way. I stop at every crosswalk and red light and keep going in my 20 minute walk to downtown.

I don't text constantly back/forth it'd usually be something quick I would have to type. But I also don't stare at my phone. I hold my phone while I grocery shop usually to check the time, my list of items I need to buy - but I don't fully stop to read those. I have never had any accidents or walking into people. I of course do not text/drive either!

@infatuatedbby I also take my phone with me when I go to the store, but like you, I don't have it in my hand or play on it while shopping. I will however, post in here from it, while waiting in the checkout line, as sometimes the lines are quite long, so it gives me time to post a little anyway. I feel kind of lost without my phone when I go out, as it is the only phone I have, and I like to keep it with me pretty much all the time.

@rosekiss I don't play on it also. I don't text and if I do it's vague like hey I'm at the groceries do you want this/that.., but I stroll my phone however I don't bump into people and I am alert. I too feel lost without my phone when I don't have it!

Cops have better things to do than this. Sounds more like a revenue booster than anything else.

Just like jay-walking! Though I have known some who got tickets for jay-walking. But I guess that day the cop was real slow?

@teamfreak16 I don't often jay-walk -- unless it is the only method. But I can see how cops have other things to do then give jay walking tickets!

@infatuatedbby - The cops here see jaywalking all the time. They let it go, though. Probably don't want to upset the tourists that are here spending money.

I think that by the end of the year (or possibly the next), you will be able to text by speaking. You can see text through your headset.
You will need a separate device that beams messages to you -- you are now approaching the intersection, your mother wants to know if you would like some more coffee, did you forget to wear your shirt to the office today.

I think my phone has the capability of writing when speaking. But I personally do not use that feature yet

@infatuatedbby Yes, it types -- your hole is wet when I tell it -- Will I sweat? Imagine the carnage that will follow if such a message were to reach some client!

I often listen music but in moderate volume so I can hear everything around.
But really wants to quit it and working on it.
From past few days, I am not listening music on road but yes in train it is fine.

When I drive - I have the music on but not too loud. And, if I'm walking for long distances I'll listen to music again in moderation level to hear my surroundings and of course look around while walking too!

I don't text or browse while I walk, I don't listen to music or pay attention to electronic devices of any kind. I enjoy walking when I'm out and about, I enjoy seeing people and places...
I look out for traffic, I spend time taking in my surroundings.
"Why?" You might ask, and the answers are simple... 1. I have no need of such distraction. 2. I have children to guide, and it's not much of an example to set if my head is down staring at a screen when it should be observing all things around and 3... I use my phone as a glorified night light and it spends nearly all its time in my bedroom because I forget to bring it down stairs ha!

That is a good point for you - having children to guide. In fact the other day I saw this lady , pushing a stroller (with a baby) she was just crossing this busy large intersection and staring at her phone constantly. She didn't look up , around to see if any cars were around either. It was scary to see for her!

Areas where its crowded, or busy - I wouldn't use my phone or when crossing the intersection, traffic, cars. I am not out too often so I'm fine and always alert. But I do see people walking even without a phone and they never look back or see if cars are coming!

I think it's a good idea though.
There are some people who don't seem to have the common sense to stop texting while walking through a busy street or intersection.
Just imagine how embarrassing that is -- to get caught with that violation!
To quote Forrest Gump: "Stupid is, as stupid does".

I know of a friend of a friends who got a ticket for jay walking. Embarrassing much?
There are people who do not pay attention and are glued to their phone. Even without using any devices, some just don't even look when they cross the street.
When I am using my phone - I am still alert and looking around. And at common sense areas like busy intersections, cross roads, etc I'd look around before proceeding!

Yeah or where it's crowded and can be dangerous. I usually use my phone when I'm at the grocery store.

Ban text while walking and driving! it's for their own good anyway. I mean what were this people thinking? can they at least wait and stop a bit?

I can see ban driving + texting, but if we're walking it should be ok... as long in moderation in my opinion. I use my phone when I walk but I always look up and around me, etc. However, I do see people who don't even look ahead and walk into others!
