I feel Guilty

Yesterday i was surprised when two ladies approached me while i am tending my daughter"s business along the road selling street foods. They were asking me for 100 pesos and they would left their cell phone as collateral and promised to return back the money as soon few hours later. They said they would like to cook pansit ( rice noodles) for a small get together for someone who just graduated in the family. First of all i didn't know them personally , but i think they are one among my neighbors who were renting house nearby. I refuse to give money because i said i have my own cell phone and secondly, the money i have is not mine,. it's my daughter's. When they left, i feel guilty and pity for them. How could i refuse to help a mother who just wanted to offer a simple and get together party for the graduate, thinking that a 100 peso bill is not enough , maybe a half kilo rice stick noodles and 1 gram pork? Honestly i feel sad but i cannot compromise the money because it was not mine...

That is a difficult situation to be put in and who knows maybe the phone was even stolen so they had nothing to loose if they give it away cheap. Right or wrong? maybe you will never know

yes maybe, but i saw the expression on their face and look worried and if it's stolen maybe they can sell it in much higher value

You do not have to feel sorry, they could be con artists, why would they pawn a cell phone to somebody they do not know? You are not sure if you know them or even know where they live either. The phone might have some issues or worst they might be setting you up for a "hulidap" ( Filipino slang for frame up in cohorts with a dirty cop), The money is not yours so why feel guilty?

They should have asked someone they knew not a stranger and besides you can't be giving away money that isn't yours.

@delyaj30 I wouldn't have given them anything either as you don't know if they really need what they were asking for.

Indeed , it was touching of them to think that way for a graduating child . Though , i being a practical person wouldn't do that just to be able to serve a better food . What is important is that they attend the graduation . They just have to live within their means . Besides , why did it take them the last minute to decide on that . They could have thought about that days before the graduation .

maybe the wife is waiting for her husband's salary because it was payday, and the husband didn't arrived on time because the woman promised me to return back the money a few hours later

Oh my, it is a difficult situation you are put through. You have a point there, the money is not yours to decide because it can also cause problems with you and your daughter. Besides, why not pawn the phone for a better price in a pawnshop or somewhere else

You did the right thing because you do not know them personally; it could be a trap! Who knows that cellphone was stolen and you'll get into trouble possessing it.

There is nothing you should feel guilty of.
