Do You Avoid Certain Topics?

I'm not asking you to go into detail, just to list a few topics if there are some, that you avoid online. I tend to stick to lighthearted humor and not personal issues, politics, and religion. We've all got our own issues to deal with and I don't like to dwell on negativity. I also feel like it's not my job to argue to convert people to my way of thinking and I TRY to accept them as they are (it's not always easy and sometimes I need to just keep some people out of my life). How about here on myLot? It's touted as a discussion board - are there some topics you won't discuss here?

I used to participate in discussions about the problems of society, morality questions, etc. But those topics made me some enemies, so I stopped participating in them. I don't plan to avoid them forever, but for now I'll stick to happier topics.

@madcrochetlab When I was new to Mylot I used to wonder why people seemed to avoid these kinds of topics. Now I know why.

@Angel_15 Yes - there are just some topics that people get very passionate about I think and they can tend to get very heated, rather than discussed in a calm and polite manner. So it's sometimes easier and best to avoid. Oh, if only we could all be perfect, right? :) LOL

I'm sorry to hear that the discussions made you some enemies. I think that is probably one of the biggest reasons people DO avoid certain topics.

@madcrochetlab,Yes,I prefer to avoid certain topics such as technology, because I am a big zero in it and politics, because I hate exchanging arguments and indulging in hateful debate.

Thanks for responding! I totally understand about the technology - I am certainly no pro in that department either but will read articles to learn more without engaging in the discussions. And I know what you mean about politics. I'd rather keep my online interactions fun and humorous so I enjoy it more. :)

No religion and no politics for me. It seems to be controversial and tends to take turns I'm uncomfortable with.

Understood. I'm the same. It's too difficult to have calm interchanges about some of those things.

Those are definitely some that people get way too passionate about for me. :)

I like a conversation I can sink my teeth into, but I'm careful when it comes to topics such as religion and politics. I find there are few people who can engage in an open discourse on these topics, and not just try to push their point of view as if it's the only one acceptable.

Yes, I am with you on that. It can get too heated and people so passionate about it that they do not realize how they are coming across. :)

@Ruby3881 Haha! My mind was blown just reading that! I totally agree with and relate to that people tend to own a belief system that was taught to them from the cradle. This is why I am not what is considered patriotic and I don't understand people who are proud of things they were born into and not earned or chosen - like financial status, race, religions, etc. I often think I'm happy to live where I do but if I were born elsewhere, I'd probably love that place just as much because it is what I've known. Thanks for adding great thoughts here. :)

@madcrochetlab Actually, I'm not at all opposed to the heat! In fact I quite like to have a rousing debate. What I dislike is discussing topics with people who can only see their own (often restrictive) viewpoint. This often happens when a person has been raised in a very homogeneous society where most people follow the same social customs and share a common religion or political bent.
I have great fun discussing and even debating both politics and religion (not to mention ethics, relationships, sexuality, etc.) with people who are able to share their viewpoint, while accepting that others are possible.
I am decidedly left-wing and lean towards democratic socialism in my politics, more than anything. I am also non-Abrahamic in my religious beliefs, with a good degree of empathy for atheists and agnostics. A lot of people really can't wrap their minds around this. To them, most of my values and beliefs are either just outright sinful or illogical. Not judging, just saying that some folks simply have been taught from the cradle that any view as divergent as mine is deviant and harmful. So they tend to dismiss it, rather than being able to consider it.
So if I'm going to discuss sensitive topics, I choose carefully the people with whom I will engage.

I have no outright taboos, generally I avoid recipe and sport pages as there isn't much to say on them but I like social issues and mature discussions on gender religion and politics.

I avoid topics that I have no knowledge in and stay away from politics and religion. In fact, I have been avoiding even commenting on those topics lately because it just seems to negativity and I get enough of that in the real world.

I agree and that is why I try to entertain and have fun online. There is enough negativity in the world without me adding to it. :)

Good reasons. I guess if something made you uncomfortable, that is a great reason not to start or join a topic. Thanks for joining THIS one though! :)

I would say I avoid topics that I do not have any knowledge in and topics that are related politics or religion. I also stay away from forums or topics that have a a lot drama in it, such as he said this to me and now I hate him, blah blah blah. I have enough drama in my real life, so I stay away from forums (some forums are just sooo full of drama) and topics.

Yes, I know what you mean! I recently left a site because it was all drama, all the time even though some of the people on the site claim there is no drama there. It was like watching a soap opera on television and I couldn't stand it anymore.
