Is staying positive that difficult?

I met this girl two years back in my master’s degree. She is totally different from the normal people. What does a normal person wish for themselves? That they get best of this world. But this girl always thought she’s not capable enough to get anything. She always carried bad luck with her in her thoughts. And guess what nothing ever good happened to her. I and a couple of friends tried our best to help her with her negativity thoughts for herself but that didn’t seem to work out and we left her as she is. Why don’t some people understand and simplify their life? Her life would have been so much better than what she is living now.

Sad for her. I think a positive attitude goes a long way. I mean, how many opportunities would we be passing up if we looked at life in a way that was like: whats the point? I hope she somehow changes her attitude. I think attitude is about 90% of the battle.

She might be suffering from clinical depression. It's a condition where one really needs to have treatment and medication that most of us just ignore.

I think these people should look at life of Stephen Hawkins and draw some motivation or inspiration from his life.
I agree that negativity or negative thoughts or pessimism is not easy to let go off, but it can surely be reduced and some optimism will help overcome it.

Yes, It becomes difficult when our mind is conditioned to think negative, its all because of the surroundings we live in(includes the family's culture, neighbourhood).Being inhabitant of something is a 21 day job but being conditioned to something is a long term job. When someone is so stucked in negativity , how can you expect his/her to deviate his/her path from negativity in few days?It takes a longer time as its's human nature which always resist to change. And Yes it can be done but with a long and consistent efforts.

Yes, well said and I completely agree to it. We almost tried for two years and still it didn't work.

@hydraa Nothing can beat the personal efforts to improve oneself. When she's not willing to change herself, no matter how hard you try to change her attitude , you simply can't.

I think she just lacks self-confidence. Another reason could be her economic status. Some people look down on themselves if they are at the lower rungs of the financial ladder.

@hydraa Could be negative childhood memories of being bullied or not being appreciated. The past always has an effect on what a person is now at present.

Maybe she Had a strong inferiority complex and insecurities in life. Maybe when she was in her childhood she experienced a lot of negativity in her life. That's why it was difficult for her to become positive.

It is sad how some people can't seem to do well in life, often due to negative thoughts, low self-esteem, etc. Positive thinking most always reaps benefits.
