What should I do to marry the right person?

It's been a long time since I have been seeing people regretting to be in their marriages. I have seen many break ups and what makes me even more afraid is when I see young lovers do not last long in relationships. So please! do you have any tips which can help someone to choose a best wife or husband so that I can at least start with?
Because I always hear from people say, "Do not make a mistake in choosing a wife or a husband"

@JamesHxstatic *(doing my reply here, James to give yours a bit of interaction. & @Billrena I don't necessarily believe in soulmates either, although there can be some people you hit it off with and others not so much. Being a friend first is important, like Jeff said. Too many young people begin their relationships with the physical side and don't even know if they'll like each other long term.
Communication is a big key along with forgiveness and although they say opposites attract, if you marry someone totally different than you, you may not have enough in common for it to last..
I've seen long-term marriages where the couple did everything together and ones where they didn't and both can work if both parties want it to work out. Nobody is perfect and the grass isn't always greener elsewhere.

How long did each of your marriages last, James? I'm on my second one. My first lasted 6.5 years but I knew within a year that I made a huge mistake.

By the way, I do not believe in 'soul mates' at all.

For me it was about finding a great friend first and yes I was attracted to my wife, but first was to see if friendship worked. brush I saw we had each other's back. Then something bad happens and you see how you work through it. Then the love grows and 26 years later I can still say I am very happy.

When you find your soulmate you will know. I knew when I met my husband that he was the one for me forever. Also, if you have spiritual beliefs-make sure your partner has the same ones. If you want children in the future it's important to find someone that also wants kids. Make sure you can talk to them about anything-communication is HUGE in a marriage!
Other than that follow your heart!
