Lonely 80 Year old man is a great cook

While my husband and I were away last week dog sitting for my niece and her husband, we got a nice dinner invitation from my niece's father in law. The man lives in the same retirement community as my niece only on the other side of the lake. He stopped over at the house one day to ask us to come to dinner at his house. He lives alone and does not know many people in the area. I know he is really lonely and would love to meet some people nearby. His son and my niece are very busy fixing up their house as they only moved into it a couple of months ago. What a surprise when we got to the house and he had wine out for us. He also made a beautiful large salad, zucchini and baked potatoes and nice big steaks on the grill. I was surprised that he would make such a lovely dinner. I plan on visiting him more often as I remember how lonely my dad use to get before he died. His wife died many years ago and even though his son and my niece live very close they hardly ever go to see him.

does the retirement community have a common area where people socialize? maybe he was a chef?

Yes they do but I don't think he would take it upon himself to do that. I will see what I can find out. He might feel better if his son wasn't so close.

Seems like a nice guy and a very generous one to invite you for dinner. He would be a great neighbor and would be a new member of your family if you want to. I must say he has a healthy body at the age of 80 and is still can do cooking. And it is very nice of you to plan of visiting him from time to time .

@ramapo17 oh I lost my father 2 months ago too. As of the moment it feels like he is still around although sometimes I would miss him .Maybe my mind has not internalize it yet. I am glad you have your children and grandson . I 'll probably start looking for a guy and start a family so I wont end up alone too hehehe

@ramapo17 wow! at 93 years old I think he has lived his life well and was able to do want he wanted to do in this lifetime. My father diet at 73 years old, although I would loved to see him live longer but my cousin who was with my father most of the time told me that my father would always tell him that he can go anytime because I think he has achieved his dream of seeing all his children finished school and have decent jobs. So despite how for me his passing was sudden I think he was already ready to go.

I really miss my dad and I use to drive almost 2 hours each way to visit him. My sister and I took turns and after all the running we did, plus working full time, I was lost after we cleaned out his house and sold it. I lost my father and mother-in-law within 5 months. Now I have no parents left. Thank goodness I have children and grandsons, even though they are 20 hours from us.

That would be nice . Yes, please visit him often , so he would be happy . Old people loves to talk about themselves , so just listen and also share some stories .

@ramapo17 Actually , it's enough for them to have someone to hear their stories . They can be repetitive stories , but you just have to bear in mind that , that's how it is with old people . Just smile and nod at their stories and they will already be happy .

@SIMPLYD You are right. I use to take care of my dad and my mother-in-law sometimes before they passed and I could have repeated the stories word for word. I never said a word as I know I am going to be there someday too.

@SIMPLYD Oh boy. I surely know how older people like to talk about themselves. My father always did that too and I would just let him go on. Half of the time he couldn't hear what we were saying anyway.

Everything he made was so good and the best thing was how much he could drink his scotch.

I think many old age people like others to visit them and talk to them. Maybe they live lonely and no people to talk to. I think he will be very happy when you visit him again.

It was and he talked the whole time we were there. He is hard of hearing so we did a lot of yelling to him but we loved every minute.
