See but not seeing

I think many of us have developed a talent of seeing but not seeing. When I was in the crowded shopping mall the other day, I could see a coin on the ground. I was too far to pick it up. There were so many people walking over the coin, and nobody even saw the coin. I just wished that I could push through the mass of human bodies to pick the coin up. Sometimes when I walk in the street, I happen to see some familiar faces, but they are not looking at anyone in particular. They do not see the people around them. I really do not know what they are looking at since they do not see the money on the ground, and they do not see the people walking next to them.

I guess if you aren't looking, you wouldn't see it. Maybe they were simply lost in their thoughts!

I think a murderer can get away with it in a crowded place. If nobody sees a crime takes place, the murderer will be gone by the time the victim falls to the ground.

@scheng1 Scary thought! I hope that people become more aware of their surroundings!

@Hate2Iron We know that it is not going to happen. When we are in the supermarket, we probably do not even "see" the person in front of us at the cashier. We probably do not remember how the cashier looks like once we leave the supermarket.

Maybe they were just not "interested" in binding to pick up a coin.

Unlikely. There is a superstition about picking up money over here. If you see a coin, no matter how low is the value, you have to pick it up. If not, you will have rejected the good luck that is given to you.

@scheng1 There is the same superstition here too. But you seriously think about it, it doesn't make any sense.

I think I am the person who is not seeing. In fact usually I am just thinking and therefore I may be absent-minded to what are around me in the street. I seldom pay attention to everything in the street.

Maybe you can start paying attention tomorrow. You can see a lot of things that are so interesting that you wonder why you never notice them before.

Its often not safe to pick up stuff from the ground either. I remember once there was a case where a guy who picked something like coin or so developed allergic reaction.

Never happen here. I always pick up the coins that I can see and easily accessible. If the coins are in the drain, then I will not go all the way to pick them up. We believe that picking up money is good luck.

A lot of people are not actually living in the present. They are always focused on something else. They miss out so much.

Yes, many of them do not even pay attention when they are driving or crossing the road. In the end, they cause so much grief when they get into an accident or cause an accident.

It does seem like people are so busy in their own minds that they do not take notice of what is around them.

Yes, that is the way of life which is very sad. That is why people can feel lonely in a world full of people. The others just do not see them, care about them.

All I can say is that everyone has their own choice here. You may assume that they are not seeing things when they are in fact seeing something else or have a mind on somewhere else. Like the coin, people may not see the point of taking the trouble of picking it up for known personal reasons. Or another part of them would be having a mind of their own where they will want to see what they want to see hence ignoring the subject in front of them at that time.

@scheng1 I believe we all have ourselves to blame at the end of the day when we are unable to express ourselves to our partners, friends or relations when we do not make an effort to be conversant in conversation. Scary even since we are ever so reliant on emoji or emoticons that I could see quite a majority that have forgotten how to cry, laugh or express some basic emotions within them.

@artemeis yes, that is true. The children today will grow up to become more a robot than a human. Once they grow up in this environment where people face the phones and computers more than other humans, they will become lonely and depressed and not able to communicate face to face with another humans.

Do you notice that most people are looking at their phones or having their headsets on, and listening to music? They are just not paying attention. It is a sad world when everyone is around each other, and nobody is talking to each other.

Most of us have a filter that lets us see some things, but not all of them.

Yes, that is true. When we are going to buy a new dress, we suddenly notice that all the ladies are wearing dress.

My mother in law teases me because I will go out of my way to pick a coin off the ground. Even a penny. But you are right, so many people are not really aware of what is going on around them. They are either internal, or absorbed in an electronic device instead. I am trying to practice more mindful behavior and being more aware of what is around me but it can be hard.

Yes, that is why there are so many accidents. Those idiots are still looking at their phones when they are crossing the road. Some of them even talk on the phone while driving. Fortunately the punishment is very stiff.

well, we tend to focus sometimes when we walk on different things so the one before us at times we cannot notice.

In fact, most of the times we do not observe anything. There are so many people around us, and we learn to ignore everyone, and we focus on our cellphone or our thoughts.

When we are going from one familiar place to another, I think we go on "autopilot" a lot of the time. Thinking our own thought and just paying enough attention to our surroundings to keep from running into things.
